vacuum veneering on curved wood

Postby RogerS » 09 Dec 2019, 17:44

On the step project I need to veneer a curved piece of MDF/ply/whatever. When I stick it in the vacuum bag, do I need to make sure that the curved piece is in its curved position. Gut feel says Yes else it could easily split when I bend the finished item.

Gut feel also says that I need to make damn sure that it's kept curved other ise it could spring back and .....ouch...split veneer time.

I'm a bit confused Roger, are you decorative veneering a component that is already curved?

Or

Are you laminating flat layers/pieces with a top veneer to form a curve?

For both I'd press them over a cork covered caul. ... Or the first, I might consider ironing my veneer onto a curved component.

It's for the vertical 'skirts' on this, Jimmy

I'll use thin MDF I think 6mm. Should bend to shape OK ...so plan would be have it pre bent then veneer to it.

This looks to be almost identical to the apron I made for my table. I'd laminate the apron using my choice of material clamped around a former, and then attach the veneer to the curved apron in a vacuum bag afterwards.

Probably easiest in either bendy ply or MRMDF, but if using solid timber, don't forget to allow for the spring back.

Thanks Robin and Jimmy. Veneer while curved is the way to go.
