Wood Haul

Postby 9fingers » 26 May 2021, 19:28

I went over to see a friend today and due to ill health he is having to give up most if not all his practical hobbies.
I came away with the back of the car chock full of ex hardwood flooring.
Having cut into a small piece the face grain looks like this:-

The end grain was a bit of a giveaway to me

Shouts red oak at me and so I did the dip test in a pot with 5mm of white spirit in the bottom.

The WS rose about 60mm in a matter of seconds. Definitely Red Oak

A good few cubic feet in my stash now :eusa-whistle:

No plans yet as such Andy. With care it should plane up to about 85 x 13 if I'm careful for boxes etc
It should edge joint nicely for wider board needs. Would also make bandsawn construction veneers for some curved work.
If you fancy any for say segmented turning you are welcome to some if and when we let you back into UK

Still impossible to make plans for UK travel. France is still amber AFAIK so getting to the and quarantineing for the duration is pointless. Hopefully restrictions on both side of the channel will be eased next month.

I had a similar haul on Tuesday. I went up to see my mate north of Andover and came back with four fantabulous boards of prime English Oak (panels for my linen chest project) some incredible 700mm wide, clean boards perfect Olive Ash and two lumps of burr Acacia (silvery green sort of colour) for a musical box that SWIMBO has ‘requested’ :eusa-whistle: Sadly, t’weren’t cheap, but for the amount of timber I got hold of, it was good value. Even better, it was all air dried. I don’t want to see another bit of KD’d wood if I can avoid it  - Rob

Is red oak usually that porous? Amazing. Never used it personally.
Don't like: wood, engines, electrickery, decorating, tiling, laying stone, plumbing, gardening or any kind of DIY. Not wild about spiders either.

Yep. NEVER use it outside, or where it can get wet.
