name for a desk lid locking catch

Trying to find the name of the automatic brass sliding catches that when you lift a desk lid up it automatically locks, and you lift it a bit more before dropping it to unlock.

close, but not the exact thing I remember. They were brass sliders that locked out and could stand any weight on the lid. Then a slight extension of the lid dropped the locking pin out and allowed the lid to close.
I specifically dont want friction folding hinges or gas struts.
Any other leads?

Use typical words in a Google image search until you see what you recognise

Been trying that for quite a while now. desk lid, chest lid, bureau, sliding locking, brass, antique (havent seen them for many years now.) lift up, lift down, and several more. So far not even close.

Change the words then to key features
I used " locking top hung cabinet hinge" and got this hit which might be what you want

No, they wont work. I'm making an outside TV box, wall mounted, for a friend. I was going to make side hinged swing open doors, just like mine which he saw and said was fine for him.
Now we get into the build and he tells me he doesnt have enough side room to have opening doors W.T.F?
:eusa-doh:
Now I have to come up with either a lift up or drop down cover. But we are talking 900 mm x 550 mm, and even in 9 mm ply thats an awful lot of weight up in the air on a spring. Factor in that sometimes its damn windy in the evenings, and that lid could go up and down like a yo yo unless its locked in the up position.

Droogs, thats the idea, but those need you to actually stick your fingers in there to push the bars up to allow it to drop.
Consider the captive audience here, OAP ex - pats, outside in the dark trying to lock up the TV before staggering off to bed all the worse for wear :eusa-dance: and the chances of someone losing a finger is too great to consider.
I need the fully automatic (mechanically automatic) lift a bit higher and lower it down.

Gas strut used to hold tailgate open.
Assume that you have scrap yards over there.

Get a few as the metal part makes a great burnisher for card scrapers.

I'm desperately trying to avoid gas struts. they leak down quite quickly and the lid is a fair weight when leverage is added in.
It might end up that way if I cant find my alternatives, but I dont like them.

Bob,
Not exactly what you describe, but hafele do lots of stay up hinges for kitchen cupboards. Have a gander at their stuff might give you a solution

I've surfed the hafels site, thanks, but no, those are all friction clamps. this lid is heavy enough that the friction to hold it up would be too stiff for a frail OAP to pull it back down.
I used to see lots of the things I'm looking for, but they must have gone out of fashion.
I really dislike gas struts, but its heading that way to get the job done.

Is this the sort of thing you had in mind: https://www.wixroyd.com/en/catalog/access-components/stays/lid-door-stays/lid-stays/n0500/g+m+c+s+a?

Nick

(PS Bisley was glorious this weekend, although the backs of my legs will tell you otherwise...)

Dave, at 100 quid plus shipping, thats 3 times the value of the cabinet   In fact I can remember a time when you could buy an mgbgt for very nearly that much

Nick, thats more like it. Not the image I had in my mind (old, brass, lots of visible parts) but it seems to be able to do the job. Thanks very much :eusa-clap: :eusa-clap:
Now I just have to find a price, and see if he wants to wait for it to be shipped here.
One small step for man...... 8-)
