oak table top movement

Postby sunnybob » 08 Jun 2021, 17:15

My oak table top is not behaving itself.
A few weeks after finishing it, there is unexpected movement.
The breadboard ends now are proud of the top surface of the table. Not a lot, but a definite ridge to the finger tips. Its as if the boards have shrunk.
Also on the edges of the table, the breadboard ends are also now proud of the boards by about a mm.
This is exactly the opposite of what I was told to expect. :eusa-doh:

Well that has been caused by the main boards losing some moisture and therefore shrinking across the grain. If you have a damper season they may well swell back to be flush, that sort of movement is common with bread board ends.

Dave
My tool kit is almost complete, only a few more to get.

This is one of the reasons why I dislike breadboard ends. The fact that you have to build in a fitting system for movement tells you that .....you will get movement.
Don't like: wood, engines, electrickery, decorating, tiling, laying stone, plumbing, gardening or any kind of DIY. Not wild about spiders either.
