wooden hinges?

Postby sunnybob » 12 Dec 2020, 20:08

I want to make a pair of small wooden hinges for a box.
Nothing too complicated, but they need to be reasonably small (not medieval), no more than a couple inches long. I have 4 mm brass rod for a pin if needed.
Any one got any pics or places to look for ideas?

Don't like: wood, engines, electrickery, decorating, tiling, laying stone, plumbing, gardening or any kind of DIY. Not wild about spiders either.

Katz moses..... make hinges, no special tools. Just a drill and a BOX JOINT JIG. :o
Thats special as far as I'm concerned

Mike, I like those, but they are longer than my box is wide. Its a birdsmouth joint lozenge shape. I need a pair of external rear mounted hinges if they are going to fit the style.

I think I'm going to have to re-think.
I've now completed and glued up the box and its pretty shallow. I cant see me making wooden hinges small enough to be in keeping with the box.

I'm pretty sure I still have a couple of brass hinges in a box somewhere. 8-) 8-)

You can use them for boxes like this.

Or small boxes.

Very neat and will definitely remember that for future use, but this box is an 8 sided lozenge shape and I cant see a way of inserting the pins through a 45 degree angle.

I shall have to use brass butt hinges mounted on the outside on this one. As usual, I didnt work anything out in advance. ;)

Ho Bob

How about these.

The hinge pins are soldered into one side of the brass plate, do opposite ones so the lid won't slide off.

Ah, now that is interesting and do-able.
A lot of work though as the only brass I have is 3/4" x 1/2" bar.
I havent checked what hinges I have yet. If I dont have any useful ones to hand I can see a lot of filing in my near future.
Thanks Pete. 8-)

Did you use 2 part epoxy to hold the brass in? I wonder about long term holding properties between metal and wood.

Hi Bob

Yes two part epoxy, I have had no complaints.
You can drill another hole through the brass to form a glue tenon, I use them on wooden key fobs and it makes a very strong joint.

Some sawdust mixed in with the glue hides any mistakes.

I reckon you could get enough metal from a couple of coins to make those hinges. :P

I've found a reasonably nice pair of normal brass hinges in my oddsnsods box that need using up.
This box is fairly substantial (50 cm long x 15 cm wide) and I worry the lid weight might pull those little brass plates out of the wood so I will fit the standard ones here, but I'll definitely design the next one around those brass pivots though. 8-) 8-)
