Thanks SB I think I understand what I am looking for thanks to the other Bob, I am going to start another thread in power tools to see if I can narrow down the options.

That bog oak isn't the easiest stuff to work, Michael. You'll still get tear out with a handplane, made harder by the fact it is hard to see the grain.

There is one which is specifically about planing a square edge.
