Thats why I thought there would be a good change of picking up a used machine to raid for parts - possibly through the Mig forum

I bought a Portamig 180 about 12 years ago. Lovely machine. Only gets light use but handy to have around.
If I was buying now, I might look at inverter models if only on grounds of taking less space.

Any good?

at 56 quid we are getting close to a 1/4 the price of a new machine.

Dave, no worries, I’ll have a look at the various machines and comeback to you for advice and thoughts if that’s ok?

Only the OP can assess the condition of the rest of the machine but 25% of new price to repair is possibly viable.

Yer ok. I was going with insurance right off figures for some reason.

with a bit of digging I'm sure we could find the specs on the motor (which to my eyes looks like a bog standard 12-24v jellybean motor), you'd have to heat the gear to remove it from the old one and press it on to the new shaft but I don't feel that would be to hard, if it costs a few quid to try it's only cost you a few quid rather than 56 of those British pounds.

Sorry Dave and Bob,

Hadn’t seen the other replies, if can fix it for a few pounds or even £50 then that is a good thing so either a new motor or that motor assembly could be a goer. I don’t know what the Telwin base model is for my Einhell which could be a problem.

The photo looks pretty similar, I suppose the best way would be to contact weldequip and see what the say?

any chance of a photo of the PCB, hopefully the voltage can be figured out from that and we can get away with just a new motor.

if the drive looks the same as the one you have now, then it is the same. it's a fairly old upgrade to swap out from a bigger machine but it takes some thinking about as the PCB often can't drive the higher powered motor.

if we can work out the voltage I reckon something like this will be fine.

don't suppose you've got a multimeter handy have you?

i do have a multimeter. what am i doing with it? presumably confirming the feed voltage to the motor when the trigger is depressed?

yep, but put the motor back on so you have a load. it will be across a range and I'd expect it to be from around 20-24v for a 24v motor or 8-12v for a 12v motor.

also to add, I reckon it's a Telwin bimax 120.

Photos of PCB will get multimeter readings this afternoon. Cheers

The front of the machine looks like this with a variable wire speed control knob which that Tekwin doesn’t seem to have?

I can't read what it says on the relay but that all looks to be 12v to my eye and the load resistor on the right is 7w so the motor I linked to should be pretty damn close to correct.
measure the shaft diameter to make sure it will fit and for 5 quid get ordering. :D

of course, there is the chance that it isn't the motor that's buggered and it's a dirty contact in the switch at the gun. ;) (reckon a bit of contact cleaner might be a good idea before you spend any money).

Cheers will get some contact cleaner in the gun but it was powering up the wire when the trigger was depressed. I’ll get confirmation of the writing on the relay and also get the multimeter into action too on the motor.

Relay text reads:

Made in Italy
FEME MZP
A 100 49 05

Meter reading:

Set to 2000m DC on my Gunsons pocket meter 1 reads 20.

Suggests a 24v motor. Bugger i got it wrong. :D

Unless I’m using my multimeter incorrectly. Wouldn’t be the first time!

That '2000m' setting will be reading millivolts, on a scale of 0 to 2000 - i.e. up to 2V. To tell between 12 and 24V, you'll want the '250' scale.

I thought that but when set to 200 there’s no reading at all and 200m it reads 24. I tried the connections in the PCB too and same readings. So maybe the PCB or a component in it is gone?

That sounds odd. Have you got a fully charged battery to test it against to make sure?
