Chestnut vase

Postby Dalboy » 18 Aug 2019, 19:13

Just finished this Chestnut Burr today it stands 6 1/2" tall by 6 1/2" across. Finished with sander sealer and satin lacquer, I then gave it a wax with woodwax22 as the satin finish was not what I wanted but the high gloss would have been too glossy.
C & C Welcome.

It is no different from turning a bowl/vase the only things that you need to be aware of is

1 check the wood regular to see if anything will break away like loose bark if any.
2 Keep all body parts behind the tool rest
3 Check tool rest distance before starting so nothing will catch
4 Sand by hand may be the only way to finish.

I have seen plenty of your work and I think you could do something like this

This trick to sanding that sort of thing with nasty sharp holes is something that Mark Sangar told me. Use some strips of abrasive paper wrapped round the grippy ends of a pair of...

... surgical forceps; that way your delicate pink fleshy bits are well away from being caught in the rotating wood. There's a lady on the market on a Saturday morning in Salisbury wot sells this sort of thing as cheap as chips. Even better, they work - Rob
