Bowl

it's not often I post something in this section of the forum, but today I did a bit of spiny work on a lump of English Walnut. This particular bit I picked up from Yandles years ago and like much stuff there, it was dirty, covered in wax and most of the other punters passed it bye.
I didn't though and bought it for about £9. It's been sitting under the lathe and today, as I was at a loose end, I had a day on 'The Dark Side'

Starting to get somewhere close to the shape and after some sanding and an application of finish...

I then reversed it and used some Ax 'Jaw Plates' to sort out the lower half of the underside:

The finished bowl:

Finished to 400g using the Kirjes system from CHT, with a single application of sanding sealer, then Yorkshire Grit followed by a coat of Hampshire Sheen wax. I'm reasonably happy with this job as it was a very, very good Walnut blank which could easily have been missed - Rob

I like that a lot. Classic elegance. Must be very satisfying to find such lovely figure inside a dusty lump.

Very nice Rob. I like the little inclusion in the rim. Would have been very easy to take that off but it gives the piece a little glimpse of what it was, a living thing.
Cheers

I didn't know you visited the spinny side at all, Rob. That's a lovely bowl.

It is surprising what people walk past just because it looks unpromising. Well in this case it was to your gain a lovely piece of grain hidden in there and with the form you have chosen it has shown it off to its best.
Top job A great piece love the colour as well

Thanks all. My 'tuit/busy/honey-do' list is currently a trifling sparse so I'm having to be fairly inventive regarding stuff to do in the 'shop :eusa-violin: We shall overcome though :eusa-whistle: - Rob
