Can you see what it is yet?

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Can you see what it is yet?

Postby 9fingers » 29 May 2021, 20:08

Sorry no early stages WIP but there are 5 components and pictured here prior to assembly but after a coat of PU.
The odd bits of masking tape are where I will need glue to take for final assembly.

Each component is made from 48 x 20mm oak finger jointed at the corners
There are three of these 780mm square

and two of these about 600mm square

And as a group

So what can it be?

You are making storage units, so that finally you can tidy your workshop up?

Seriously, my racked brains are empty. The corner chamfers must have a purpose. Nice neat work.
Don't like: wood, engines, electrickery, decorating, tiling, laying stone, plumbing, gardening or any kind of DIY. Not wild about spiders either.

The smaller ones fit 45 degrees round on top of the larger ones.

Not a clue!

Spot on Malc.
On the smaller squares, the chamfers mean that the distance between the internal corner and the face of the chamfer is 20mm = the thickness of the timber used throughout.
measuring chamfer to chamfer diagonally is 780 mm, the same as the sides of the large square.

Here is an earlier photo with held together with clamps and a few bottles to make sure they would be stable enough.

Exactly how many bottles is it intended to hold, Bob?

When I started the design, I looked up bottle sizes and surprised to find quite a range of diameters especially if you consider champagne and prosecco.
There are 8 triangular sections and I tend to buy half cases. and would store one wine per section
Sections should hold between 7 and 9 bottles according to diameter.
So say 60-70 bottles?

Nice.

My Grenache bottle from Lidl lasts me about 5 days. Your stock would probably last me over a year! :)

It’s more a case of building a rack to fill the space available and keeping the wines classified by type. Our average consumption is 1-2 bottles per week but once we find something we like I’ll buy half a case. When we used to holiday in France we would be bringing back best part of a years supply although I can’t see us bring that much back again.I guess there will be limits on private imports.
These days most of our wine comes free delivery from Aldi. Buy one in the shop to try then order online if we like it.

We do a (usually) once yearly overnighter across the island to a winery that we both like the produce of. Buying a hundred bottles at a time from source saves us enough money to pay for the trip :eusa-clap:

But there isnt room here for an oak (or any other) wine rack, so they go in the wardrobes and under the bed till required :eusa-whistle: :eusa-whistle:

A trivial issue I can foresee with this design is that bottles will be accessible in reverse order to that which they're put in.......so last in, first out. You will have wine that is virtually inaccessble when the segment of the rack is full, so you are either going to be shifting bottles about to get to stuff in the bottom corners, or you are going to have to have a policy of emptying a triangular section entirely before refilling it.

18 litres is the limit Bob, which is 24 bottles. Less than 6 months supply for you ;)
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Thanks Andy
I think our days of bringing back a years worth are over anyway. Compared to early 90s when it seemed French wines were so much better vfm than anything we could get in uk, we can now buy excellent stuff from all over the world for around a fiver delivered to our door. We’ve developed a taste for Southern Hemisphere wines lately too.
Seems strange to think back that we packed the car with empty wine boxes (filled with self catering foods etc) on the way out to ensure we could fit enough booze in on the way home.

Currently sitting on the floor, the rack will be raised to a comfortable working height later.

Capacity of a triangle with Prosecco bottles is a mere 6 with not quite enough room for a 7th.

However a selection of 10 reds will fit nicely

IMG_3109[1].JPG
(191.35 KiB)

Due to small quirks in the design (features!) half the triangles are very slightly smaller and hold 9 reds

Making the max capacity of conventional reds =76 bottles.
I suspect with a slender Hock type bottle (not our taste) would be up to 80.

More than enough for SWMBO and I anyway.

Having stacked a few wine bottles in my life, may I make a suggestion.
Straight sided bottles are no problem, but the curved sided are prone to slide off of each other and crash to the floor.
There is no need to ask me how I know this.

If you make a font upstand for the fizzy bottles section so that they are slightly tilted down at the rear, your flooring will not be subjected to very suspicious stains. :eusa-doh:
