Small Oak Cupboard

Postby Blackswanwood » 10 Jun 2021, 20:22

I really like Mike Pekovich’s style of woodworking and decided to have a crack at the small cupboard from his book The Why and How of Woodworking.

I started with this ....

Oak Board
(334.06 KiB)

which post a bit of work with the saw and being put through the planer thicknesser turned into this ....

Roughly Sized
(326.23 KiB)

Tenon saw and Shooting Board were then used to size accurately ...

Accurate sizing
(363.53 KiB)

The dovetails and pins are 1/16th of an inch over length which I wasn’t sure about but as it’s coming together think they look good (or more importantly my wife does!)

To mark out the mortises and tenons accurately for the shelf I used a spacer

Mortices
(360.71 KiB)

Unfortunately here is where a lapse in concentration came to light .... I should have put the rebate for the back in before cutting the dovetails and measure the tenons off the back rather than front edge.

Rebate
(408.65 KiB)

The former was corrected by routing a narrower rebate and squaring off with a chisel. The rebate would have incorporated both the back panel and a French Cleat but I’ll come up with an alternative way of hanging it.

I did consider cutting a new shelf but then decided to get on with the glue up and use it an an opportunity for a design feature .... to be continued

To correct my mistake in measuring the shelf tenons incorrectly I reduced the width to align with the rebate at the back. I then took a strip of oak and did my first bit of carving. The lines were made with a scratch stock and the carving done with a sharp chisel. (It’s a straight copy from Pekovich’s book). It took two attempts to get it right.

Next I made the drawer

And then moved on to the cupboard door. First I T&G’d three boards

This is the resulting panel

Door Panel
(400.02 KiB)

The door is traditional rail and stile construction.

Door
(379.16 KiB)

The door will be set back by 1/16th of an inch and a thin edging strip that the hinge will be attached to will fill the gap visible in the picture.

I quite like his stuff and approach but by far the best thing in his book is his dovetail transfer jig which is mind bogglingly simple and supremely accurate. If fact I’ve made three for different sized drawers etc - Rob

That looks very nice, I've done a bit of carving recently myself and I think it really improves the look. Your workshop and bench also look great by the way.

I'm watching with interest and admiration. I don't think I have ever seen a wip thread where all the tools are new, shiny and top quality, so my expectations are high!

Really nice quality work. Impressively sharp dovetail sockets.

Excellent work, this is another example of how we are moving back to real handwork, better pull my finger out!
Lovely light airy workshop you have.

Agreed about the light workshop. It looks like a great space to work in.

Re: Small Oak Cupboard - Now Finished

I finally got this finished over the last couple of evenings.

The back is made of ash which I finished with Polyvine. The oak has all been finished with Osmo.

The door and drawer knobs are not to my taste but were chosen by my daughter who is the customer!

I'm going to make another one as there are a few things along the way I got wrong/can improve on.

Thanks for watching!

I completely agree about the handles; totally out of character with the job. IMO, handles and pulls are one of THE most important parts of any project and the brass ones as fitted just don’t look ‘right’ - Rob

Don’t beat yourself up over the handles. To me the whole cupboard looks excellent and I’d be happy to have it hanging on my walls.
