I really like Mike Pekovich’s style of woodworking and decided to have a crack at the small cupboard from his book The Why and How of Woodworking.
I started with this ....
- Oak Board
- (334.06 KiB)
which post a bit of work with the saw and being put through the planer thicknesser turned into this ....
- Roughly Sized
- (326.23 KiB)
Tenon saw and Shooting Board were then used to size accurately ...
- Accurate sizing
- (363.53 KiB)
The dovetails and pins are 1/16th of an inch over length which I wasn’t sure about but as it’s coming together think they look good (or more importantly my wife does!)
- Dovetails
- (323.64 KiB)
- Pins
- (377.78 KiB)
To mark out the mortises and tenons accurately for the shelf I used a spacer
- Spacer Bar
- (395.24 KiB)
- Mortices
- (360.71 KiB)
Unfortunately here is where a lapse in concentration came to light .... I should have put the rebate for the back in before cutting the dovetails and measure the tenons off the back rather than front edge.
- Rebate
- (408.65 KiB)
The former was corrected by routing a narrower rebate and squaring off with a chisel. The rebate would have incorporated both the back panel and a French Cleat but I’ll come up with an alternative way of hanging it.
- Rebate corner clean up
- (252.51 KiB)
I did consider cutting a new shelf but then decided to get on with the glue up and use it an an opportunity for a design feature .... to be continued
- Glue Up
- (322.62 KiB)
