Guess the weight of the log?

Postby Andyp » 20 Jun 2020, 11:32

I don't have the answer BTW just a rough guesstimate based on the average weight of wet (fresh sawn) Douglas Fir of 49lbs per cubic foot which I found on an American website. . It is 1.5m long with a diameter of 36cm. Answer came out at 266kg

And was the only usable piece from this Black pine

We also had a couple of Douglas Fir trees down which has left me with these. With are between 2 and 2.5m long, diameter 30cm+

A local sawmill will cut them for me (although I have not had a price yet). I have access to a braked trailer and my car will tow a max of 1200kg.
I'd like to have a reasonable level of confidence about how many of these logs I could safely load at a time.
I'd like to have them cut into boards approx 3" thick which I will would like to use to make a high raised bed (1m high).

The small stuff from the those trees are being stripped

and will either go around the potager

and be used to make a raised bed, log cabin style

Speaking as someone that had a hernia repair 20 years ago and still feels the repair pulling at times don't do anything silly handling those logs!

Of course Bob,
266 weight in lbs.

Question still stands though do you think that lump of wood would weigh 110kgs?

Noted. Robert

I certainly can't pick them up on my own. Will have 3 of use to shift when the time comes. So far all we have done is roll them, or pick one end up and swivel.

Neither have I Andy really.
You could think of it as how many buckets of water in that sort of volume and multiply by 0.8 ish to get somewhere near.

I started with a premise that 1/4 tonne seemed too much to me and then did some sums based on 800 grams per litre.
1 litre = 100 x 100 x 100 mm

Well for the log in the first image it took 3 of us to lift one end up on to a trailer. We took 2 trips. For 60 euros I should get it cut into as many 3” planks as possible, varying widths, waney edge. I hope nothing was lost in translation :)
