Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

The forum needs your help !

Postby RogerS » 20 Jan 2021, 12:16

In Halo Jones thread here in the first post are two images.

Some of us can see them. Some of us can't.

What we'd like is for as many of you as possible to have a look at the first post in that thread and let us know :

if you can see the two images
what browser and which version are you using
which operating system and which version.

Many thanks, chaps.

If it is the DIY Disaster thread, then at the moment all I see is a couple of greyed out no entry signs.

However, when the thread first appeared, ie within 60 mins of being posted, I could see a plate of SS that had a big massive gouge out of it.

I am running The most recent updated version of windows 10 and using Mozilla Firefox 84.0.2(64bit)

I can see the images and always could. I'm using Opera on Android, but maybe more significant is that I'm logged in to my Gmail account, which might be why I can see shared Google photos while others can't. (No expertise in that area but it's something I think I remember from similar discussions elsewhere.)

Bizarre. I posted earlier in the other thread that I can see the pictures. That was on my Mac laptop, running OSX Big Sur and Safari 14.0.1.

I am now on my iMac Pro (big screen) and have just this morning updated to Big Sur and Safari is running 14.0.2 ....and I can't see the images, just placeholders. I am logged into my (hardly ever used) gmail account now and still cannot see them.

Adrian

Edit: just tried in Chrome, latest version. No joy.

It's definitely more of a Google based issue than a forum specific issue, as previously stated :eusa-whistle:

Nope. Trying to access the images using the URL in the HTML on the page produces the no entry sign for me in

Chrome 88, Firefox 84, Edge 87 and even IE "20H2" on Windows 10 Pro 20H2.

On browsers not logged in to a Google account I was directed to log in to one before it would return the no entry image. I'd guess it's a permissions thing with Google since that's where they're hosted.

If the photos were posted by logging in to Google Photos, copying an image address, and pasting that link into the forum, then that link is time-limited and expires after a short period. That would explain why there's no correlation with browser or operating system; the people who can see them are those who first opened the post before the links expired. The images then get cached on that device, and you'll keep being able to see them as long as you use the same browser.

If you want to share images directly from Google Photos in a way that will keep working, you have to explicitly create a shared link. People will then have to click that, open the Google Photos page, and the image will be there; last I knew it didn't allow direct embedding on other websites.

great, so next question, could you all let me know your IP address? :D

Mark or Roger

please delete everyone's posts in this thread now we have an answer. it's data that could be used maliciously (I know, not like anyone couldn't find it out easy enough, but why make it easier than it has to be)
