Figs

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

Figs

Got these before the birds had devoured them.

Lots more but too high for me to reach and I cannot manage ladders anymore.
Tree Surgeon booked for mid September to trim this and others to a manageable height.

they look very green Rod. Are they ripe? Do they ripen off the tree? the figs we scrump around here are much darker even brown.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Yes they are ripe and very soft. If I left them to go brown the birds would have them all.

I planted it a few years ago but cannot remember the variety. Brown Turkey is a common one.
You are supposed to contain the roots but this has “escaped”. It grows a tremendous amount each year.

"We can but dream of growing fruit up here "

Apples
Pears
Strawberries
Backcurrants
Gooseberries
Plums
Walnuts
Blackberries
Loganberries
Blueberries

All outside, no shelter, save regular height garden walls, no cloches. Sure, no figs, citrus fruits, grapes or melons, but my neighbour is growing maize quite successfully in an open bed...(mind you, remains to be seen if they ripen).

C'mon Roger, it ain't THAT bad oop 'ere!!

I picked the greengages today. Bucketful after bucketful. Twice as many as last year, and we lost our best tree in between. God knows what we're going to do with them all.

Yebbut...you're on the Sunshine East Coast

We get the cloud and rain from Cumbria and the cloud and rain from the rest of Northumberland !

The "Sunshine Strip" hmmmm? Compared to the north coast of Ireland, where I spent my first quarter century, maybe...just maybe, but comparatively, not quantitatively!!
What I was perfectly astonished by is the high frequency of cleggs and midges in the last 10 days. We live on a hill-top, with good agricultural land around us, just one 'wild' meadow immediately over the garden wall, but the density of vampiric Insecta is staggering. One wonders - like a certain Tolkien character - "what they eat when they can't get hobbit"(human). I presume Roger, the equally high density of woolly ungullates up with you is sufficient distraction to preserve humanity around your locale? :D

I'm afraid you presume wrong as my wife will testify. She's a midge magnet. Clegs like me but luckily not many around this time. At least you know they've bitten you as you can feel them and bash them. Pyrrric victory, I know. The one insect that bugs the hell out of me are those swarms of small black flies. My theory is they like ear wax because wearing headphones, they wander off. But then again perhaps it's my music.
