• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Chisels

Sandpaper is a cheap and easy way to get started. https://paulsellers.com/2013/10/debunking-myths-mysteries-scary-sharp-methods/ Diamond stones are worth the investment imoh, one 1000 grit plus a ceramic waterstone make a great combination However, in my experience, diamond stones don't last...

    Chisels

Stanley 5001s are good quality, and can be found for a fair price on eBay. If you want new, I can highly recommend Ashley Isles MkII (and it's great to support a UK manufacturer!) The general advice for chisels is, don't be tempted to buy a set. Get what you need when you need it 😀

Thank you! I hope that Cedar will last well. It's screwed together with Stainless steel screws, so I'm a little worried that wood movement might fight with the screws and cause things to split or break apart... but we'll see. It'sa learnig experience!

Thanks AndyP. Yes, that's correct. Theres a little spacer nailed to the bottom of each board to keep it looking neat and tidy :)

    Peter Follansbee (and other) carving

I wonder if the grain orientation is helpful. The thing I've enjoyed most about learning to carve is a better understanding of grain. Carving neatly against the grain is tricky on a flat-sawn board (particularly curves). Split boards have the grain running more regularly, which sounds helpful...

A weekend project. Compost bins made from Sawn Cedar, milled locally.

Peter Rives (splits) Green Oak, so it's more like quartersawn than flatsawn. I'd like to have a go at this myself one day to see how much of a difference it makes! https://pfollansbee.wordpress.com/2009/10/18/theres-oak-then-theres-riven-oak/...
