• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Fourthed! We've got quite a few rag rugs around the house, all made by my grandfather with a tool like that.

They're one of the only places I know of where you can get these (that's the 3 metre one, the 2 metre one is here) for a moderately sensible price. Unfortunately, their selection of steel rules is pretty awful and none of them meet what I would consider the basic requirements (the ability to use...

All the ones I have with metric and imperial on just get used as spacers/shims and such like :)

Don't buy that one, this one's much better and cheaper too: https://www.axminstertools.com/axminster-precision-stainless-steel-metric-rule-600mm-104520 The Shinwa one has millimetres on the top edge and half millimetres on the bottom edge (if you have the 0 end on the left). On the back...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

Seeing that picture of it wedged in situ shows what a work of art that door is. Lovely job.

It's just over there. No, not there, there! Where I'm pointing! Can't you see my finger?!

It's underneath the thingamabob, just to the left of the whatchamacallit and behind the oojamaflip. You can't miss it if you look there.

    Bedside Table

I think I've got enough wood for about 6 of them :ROFLMAO: I know, but there isn't enough space on one side of the bed for a bedside table (there's a side-on chest of drawers that opens into the space where a bedside table would go). Thus if I make two of them then one will just have to find...

    Bedside Table

I still haven't decided what I'm going to do regarding the number of drawers, but I don't need to decide yet. Regardless of my final decision, I know the bedside table will need to have four legs and they'll start off about 40 mm square and a bit under 700 mm long. This morning I took...

    Bedside Table

That's a good point, although the difference can probably be offset a bit if the middle rail is made out of the same plank as the drawers (which obviously needs a relatively thick piece to be resawn). When I made that little Sycamore and Walnut drawer unit I cut the walnut piece in three and...

    Bedside Table

Another thought I had (supporting the one drawer option) would be to just accept that there's only one drawer in the table itself and plonk something like this on top: (but not that exact one as that one lives on my desk at work)

    Bedside Table

Thanks Andy, those are useful references. I found a few when I was hunting around, including (among many others) these: I'm still firmly ensconced on the fence at the moment. I've got some fairly busy weekends coming up, so I may not have to make a decision for a couple of months yet!

    Bedside Table

That's an interesting idea, although I don't think it would help with the "heaviness" issue. To get the depth of drawer that would hold enough for it to be worth having a sliding tray I'd end up with something like this I think: at that point I think I'd be inclined to just embrace the two...

    Bedside Table

I haven't managed to do much on the table in the last few weeks, mainly due to the heat wave making the workshop be essentially off-limits. This weekend is promising to be a bit cooler so I'm hoping to get started on some of the wood preparation. In the meantime I have managed to do a bit more...

    Coronated

Yeah, it was "thing" where I grew up (Reading area, but my parents, who were probably my main source of hearing it, were from Hertfordshire/Dorset & Kent). My other half (from the Midlands) was used to "think", but in her family they call roundabouts "islands" so I discount most of her opinions...

To be fair, 1623 was rather a long time before the first American dictionary was even written (1806 I think). The OED agrees with the 1623 date & puts it as being from an Englishman: https://www.oed.com/dictionary/coronate_v?tl=true https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Cockeram (I also hate...

If you're drilling horizontally, try sticking a ring on the shank of the drill. You can see by eye if it's off left-to-right & the ring will move forward or backwards if it's off up or down. Alternatively, drill through with the 3mm bit & then open it up with the 12. Drill bits will generally...
