• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Tool boxes tool chest

You might like this version, I originally had a full height suitcase style box with two drawers. They were the most favoured type in this area. Selling the push bike and buying my first car brought problems, the only way to carry the suitcase was to stand it upright on the back seat or lie it...

    A narrow boaters Sutherland Table

attachment]Thanks Ian. I though that you might like to see that the corners are in fact one of two short cuts I use. The corners are glued on and cleaned off level with a hand plane before the rest of the edging is added. The edging is glued in place using the oak strips shown, which have been...

    Toxic timber

I’ve just been viewing a site on which large numbers of wooden items are advertised as having been made from recycled pallet wood. I am aware that toxic treatments on pallets are not supposed to be allowed here or in European countries, but by their very nature these things must travel round the...

A little light spindle work to see if there is any interest?

    Chinese ( marine) plywood

I notice that the adverts for this rubbish are increasing in number, the last two sheets I ( inadvertently) purchased turned themselves into “puff pastry “ very rapidly. I won’t be buying any but let’s hope it forces a reduction in the prices for decent European materials.

    Hinge recess cutting jig

Mine are not as swish as yours but it’s the same thinking. I use the 30mm guide bush and a standard cutter. I think writing on the information is more important since it is easy to forget the details. This also has built in depth reference. Mike.

    Push screwdriver

Spiral ratchet screwdriver is the correct term I think, normally called a pump screwdriver in the workshops I worked in. As already mentioned they were used with slotted screws since posidrive was years away. Their use was not easy, but when mastered they speeded up the job. The drawback being...

    Track for a P/T

Tracks/ Rails . Not if you have a concrete floor. Nylon wheels have supported mine for more than thirty years, but it only weighs in at .4 of a ton. Mike.

    A true multi tool

An acquaintance sent for a blower to fit the batteries he already had. He seems to have been sent a wonder tool. I’ve seen some strange translations but this is a cracker.

I’ve got four! None valued at fifty quid though.

    Welding cast iron.

The drawback to welding is as you say you can only, weld one side of the break, and the stress from the pinch bold will be considerable and is probably the cause of the failure. My suggested solution is that you grind off the two lugs used as a pinch and weld up the break after veering it out...

    Templates for routing

attachment] It's looking better now I've got rid of the ones I can't identify, but the collection still looks like an application for an arts council grant! They all have a use with either the router or spindle moulder.

    Trailer refurb advice and riveters

I'm with Andy in using 6 mm dome head bolts sold by the pack as gutter bolts. My trailer has just had the refurb. I previously used an 18mm sheet of Chinese ply for the replacement bottom, it turned into " puff pastry" in about twelve months. The new base is 20mm Iroko t and g with small...

    Cold Frame

Ive been busy converting a few bits of left over Iroko into a winter home for my small collection of Triffids. Now we don't have a greenhouse they have been kept in the utility room over the cold season, the warmth in there was giving them ideas of excessive growth and world domination, so I'm...

    Beginner Planing Question

. My Record 78 can have the fence on either side as shown. You have the answer when you say the timber can be arranged with the grain in the right direction. You could use the grooving plane against the grain for a few strokes before dispensing with the fence and allowing the plane to follow...

    Cascamite ( really ?)

I understand that Polyvine are trying to convince us that they now have a Cascamite that is like the real stuff! I don't believe a word of it, I'm still waiting for a refund on the last 1.5 Kg that refused to set.
