• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Planer thicknesser?

I have a 260 Electra Beckum that I cannot fault (apart from the stoopid thickness measure ruler.... that I must get around to changing) I expect they would be quite nicely priced as used.

    Another tool chest

When I made my tool chest during my Yacht joiner apprenticeship in the 70's it was made with "waterproof" dovetails as an exercise. The tails are undercut to add an extra shoulder that impedes water ingress and is a common joining technique used for hatches etc. Has anyone on here cut these I...

Let me be the first here……..

I'm with you on this Steve, too often flags are hijacked by the right. The wonderful irony of this is often that said individuals don't even understand the English/UK differentiation. National pride? too many un-justified "excursions" for me.

American here in Oundle (Peterborough) - Brand new to woodworking

I had a TS but sold it quite recently and yes there are times such as for accurate dimensioning when they are nice but so is the room it leaves. A good bandsaw more than makes up for it. PT yes because lets face it who really wants to plane boards to thickness...

American here in Oundle (Peterborough) - Brand new to woodworking

To get into things with minimum delay, my advice would be to build a Joiners style bench which are simple and quick to make and very sturdy. If you then want to make something more fancy you will have a good bench on which to make it and you can push it to one side and use as an additional...

    Acetone

Also, the cans of expanding foam gun cleaner are acetone. (Screwfix etc)

Is there such a thing as 'cheap' paring chisels!

Yep, Paul does a video on making a plough plane using a chisel as an iron. He's good.... a proper old school time served Joiner.

    Chisels

Easy choice Blue handled Stanley or Marples are consistently excellent. Cheap on Ebay. Just make sure the back of the chisel is rust and pit free.

If there was one hand tool which you would like to see made again.

You've done better than me, although I must say I haven't tried one for years maybe I'll dig it out and sharpen it up.

If there was one hand tool which you would like to see made again.

Just for some contrast..... Tools that you are happy to have been discontinued? The adjustable brace bit? Awful things. At least I don't think they are still made.

If there was one hand tool which you would like to see made again.

Um...... Which tools have been discontinued? Ok the spiral ratchet screwdriver (or "pump" as they were referred to), I still have mine, every yacht Joiner back then had one but as mentioned above some Foreman banned their use. Mine still hangs forlornly waiting to be employed once more. Compass...

    Party Wall

Part of a PWA does cover working hours which are normally added automatically ie "normal" working hours 9-5 no Sundays. You would be perfectly within your rights to have adjustments made though. The person carrying out the work is fully responsible for all payment of a PWA. Ordinarily, the...

    Workshop strip foundation

You never know... We recently built a kitchen extension and during the dig we found no less than 3 unexplained sewerage pipe runs. They were redundant but it did cause a lot of hassle with cameras and discussion with Thames water to satisfy the build over agreement.

    Outside door frame - finished

As a Teacher, I often manage to "aquire" ex Science bench tops which where always iroko.... I believe it was used due to its acid resistance.

    Outside door frame - finished

Oak. This (ex) pro yacht Joiner who is very well versed in Iroko (who hates the dust) would only use it (and often does) when its free!

    Bread Baking

A little ascorbic acid acts as a useful improver when using fresh yeast.

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

Interesting.... I think I'll stick to Osmo and combinations of poly/ cellulose sanding sealers.

Interested to hear your thoughts on the Odie's Oil? especially considering its price point.
