• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

How long to cut a rebate (unpowered)?

Assuming you mean a through rebate... A 778 fillister plane will make mincemeat of it. Properly set up this plane will not produce the often complained of sloping/stepped edge as mentioned above if it is set up correctly with the blade protruding from the side face of the body.... that is why...

    Back to basics

Very nice. EVERYONE should turn at least a couple of bowls.... one of the most forgiving yet still useful/interesting/beautiful woodworking jobs of all.

    Offcuts

Good question, this definitely becomes an issue... "shorts" (300 or less) on a shelf/rack so that you can see the end of each piece clearly (woodturning fodder) then vertical storage for up to about 600 between "grids" to prevent them being kicked over Keep a box of very short bits to use as...

Richard Maguire aka The English Woodworker

If one MUST bother watching a YouTube woodworker then P Sellers has at least served a proper traditional apprenticeship so has gone through the woodworking mill as it were and has a pretty much no nonsense approach for 50 plus years.

    Nostalgia

Its nice to reuse and repurpose timber from inherited pieces. I currently have a satinwood occasional table, a Honduras mahogany dining table (made in Carisbrooke) and a teak cupboard inherited from family members so my plan is to turn them into smaller usable items and distribute amongst family...

    Liberon spirit sanding sealer

It will be a cellulose thinner. Easy to obtain. I've never tried meths but I doubt it would be the thing.

    Everything, all at once.

Plums and blackberries in huge abundance here in the "garden of England" BUT on yesterdays morning run a fig tree in fully ripened bloom... delicious.

    Gibbs Finishing Systems

I remember using those to shape/smooth yacht coach house sides back in the early 80's although that was in an air drill of course.

    HDL LDL

Also, do not worry about dietary cholesterol as it does not significantly contribute to to blood cholesterol. Excessive animal fat intake is the thing to avoid. Not all sliced bread is bad though, if its wholemeal and simple then its good.

Either way, I assume you have a sacrificial anode fitted?

    Steam bending

When I was in boatbuilding, (yacht joinery to be precise!) rock elm was considered one of the best timbers for steaming. I don't know if its even possible to obtain now.... this was 40+ years ago!

    New bandsaw

Ok thanks very much that's good because... I did order the 14/12 fom Yandles but have now changed the order to the BX which should be arriving next week. I changed because of the BX having more power, the brake and supposedly stiffer frame and it takes up no more space (slightly less in fact)...

    TDF

Ah..... the race of truth! I've gone under the hour on a 25 a few times which is decent for "normal" club riders. Slug like for these guys however! And despite popular belief, obviously equipment matters, but the returns diminish almost as fast as the riders move. My TDF highlight is shaking...

    Heatwave?

Yep and we are all going to die ffs. Last time we were given these warnings we cycled over the Gospel pass (highest road pass in Wales) Needless to say we survived and we are well past the first flush too :ROFLMAO:

    New bandsaw

I am in the market for a new bandsaw. The two I am considering are the Record Sabre 350 or the Laguna 14 12. Both can be had for identical price. The Laguna has a touch more resaw capacity (not a huge deal for me) and ceramic guides and I think a little more power. The record has a fine...

    Fish recipes

When I lived on the Hampshire coast, our neighbour often caught mackerel off the beach. Once you've had that simply grilled and simply seasoned within an hour of being caught you really cannot imagine better!

Looking for a good oak stain

Just avoid (ready made) water based, IME it does not absorb at all well especially on tangential surfaces making it very difficult to get an even result in fact its just plain awful. As said, any spirit based(y)
