• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Building your own kitchen cabinets?

I would probably choose laminated chipboard for a kitchen carcase over the pathetic offerings of plywood from all but the best suppliers. I really do not see why you wouldn't use it especially if you know what is what with it.

    Teak Table

I served a very traditional yacht joinery apprenticeship back in the 70's down in Lymington, Hampshire. Teak was THE most common timber, solid and very high quality faced ply too. When we bought the stuff we ordered it as a tree (converted obviously!). It was wonderful, the stuff was everywhere...

Why are plunge cuts more dangerous?

Is it not simply that during the plunge the riving knife has little effect?

    Odies Oil

I'll stick to my instant face lift cream thanks.

    Best alternative to Photoshop?

I almost always shoot in RAW format so use RawTherapee which I have found to be about the best for that file type (it works with Jpeg as well). Its free open source too.

Using a Track Saw for Rip Cuts Instead of a Table Saw?

As above. A track saw unless you have a lot of space to manoeuvre a full sheet around a large machine with a big table. For smaller scale sheet cutting don't underestimate a battery powered 4inch blade (mine is Dewalt) I use mine frequently against a clamped straight edge (or not).

    Finish for oak in kitchen?

I used Top Oil on new oak worktop (so first coat) yesterday at 5pm, this morning it was most definitely dry possibly enough to have very lightly rubbed the nibs off. Time to actually cure may be longer but IME it isn't slow.

    Finish for oak in kitchen?

    One of the Osmo oils.

    Building your own kitchen cabinets?

I have part made my own, I did compromise by buying the carcasses. I then made frames biscuit jointed that were planted on the front with a cock bead around apertures. I would do it again, I don't see anything particularly wrong with using chipboard carcasses so long as they are put in well...

Setting a new bar on being anally retentive

I know! but I have lost count how many times I have been asked to do this with no other authentication.

Setting a new bar on being anally retentive

Don't forget to add a "digital signature" In other words a scribble with a mouse that bears no resemblance to your actual signature.

I didn't think i said anything wrong to my wife.

Taking "frozen assets" to another level.

    Workshop intercom

Sounds like a terrible idea! 😂😂😂

End of support for Windows 10

This was my understanding, I have no idea why it "updates" almost every time.

End of support for Windows 10

I wonder what "support" actually amounts to sometimes. I have 10 on a laptop but my desktop still runs win7 very nicely, I cannot change it because there would be no available drivers for my photo printer in later versions of windows and the machine would not run it anyway without an upgrade...

    Repurposed block plane !!

I turned my carvers mallet from a lignum vitae table lamp that I picked up at a jumble sale years ago. I like to think I have made a small contribution to reversing this type of malarkey.

    Spindle gouges

I think that as you turn more, you will see less difference between different tools in as much as they can all produce shearing cuts dependant on bevel length/shape and tool presentation. A spindle gouge with a long finger nail shape will produce as good a finish as a skew and some feel with...

    Circular table apron

Perhaps a (vertically grained) little angled post that stood out 3 or 4mm in each joint that was biscuited? probably too small to embellish much though.

    Circular table apron

I agree with AndyT on this, octagonal with a cock bead around the bottom edge would look good... more oaky.

    Circular table apron

As mentioned above, cutting from the solid will incur waste but on a relatively small table such as yours it would be pretty minimal? The internal off cuts can be fashioned into handy sanding blocks for the inside surfaces. Solid is less work than laminating too and the shape accuracy of each...
