• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Thanks, the reveals around that round window were tricky but I was happy with how they came out.

Not so much a 'build' as a 'choose one and fit it out'

My first thought is why do you need to make doors when there’s such a variety of quality readily available doors on the market, if your existing openings don’t match the standard sizes change the frames much less work in the long run. Plus a nice new door in an old frame usually makes the old...

    Beautiful fall colour.

We had a nice walk around Calke Abbey yesterday afternoon & whilst the trees were looking magnificent I was surprised how beautiful the Dahlias were still looking They aren’t flowers I’ve grown since I was a kid growing them with my dad but definitely one I’m going to try...

I converted one around 2010, on & off but mainly on it took 4 years, the biggest cost was insulation something you really need to go to town on if you are going to keep heating costs to a minimum. I’d add that you really need a quality survey of the roof, finding out work needs doing on the roof...

    Dehumidifiers

We have two dehumidifiers one in the workshop & one in the house, the running costs are negligible as not only is air with less water content cheaper & quicker to heat but the water the house one collects is saved & used for ironing.

Another good source of Sapele is 1960’s-70’s internal doors if you can get hold of any, this was a glass panelled door I took out recently. It yielded some lovely Sapele which was very dry having been in a centrally heated house for the last 50+ years. As friends who make windows...

    It was published elsewhere, apologies.

It’s a reinterpretation of an old joke, when I heard it years ago it was about a chaps mother in law

It’s an old one of these Mike https://jmjwood.co.uk/products/lamont-wood-welder It produces a radio frequency that sets water based glues so saves enormous amounts of time in a production shop. You just put the paddle on the glued & clamped joint pull the trigger & the radio frequency cures the...

Finally got the office furniture finished yesterday, I’d fitted the main units a couple of weeks ago, which they’ve started using, but they asked for shelves & end panel on the end of the locking unit which I’d had to wait for. Luckily for me @Bungle needed his wood welder repairing so he...

Super glue and activator packs withdrawn at Toolstation

You can buy bottles of debonder, I have 2 though these days I tend to use superglue wearing nitrile gloves, it saves a lot of agro.

Could be but skin generally doesn’t need any activator to stick itself to anything when using superglue DAMHIKT 🫣

    Router jigs & accessories

Best thing I made for my Makita trim router was a mini router table I bought a plate & second base from Katsu for very little money & it fits the Makita very well. The fence is just a piece of angle iron with some holes & slots cut in it & MDF sliding fences, a wood port allows for dust...

Just looking on screwfix & you can’t buy them together there either, I’d not heard anything about it not being available together does seem a little bizarre

Hand saw with zero set on one side

From what I’ve read on the subject planed joints give a stronger bond than joints off a saw, less chance of very small gaps that weaken the glue joint

I’ve treated myself for a future project.

There’s a Ukrainian/American tool making company on Instagram, https://www.instagram.com/strong_way_tools?igsh=ZDlnbDF1dm9rN3p I wonder if they are one & the same Ian. 🤷‍♂️

Got a request off the young lady I make plaques for for coffin shaped plaques, nothing fancy but annoyingly the 4mm MDF I get has dropped in quality. The surface seems fluffy & the cut edges even more so, I’m hoping my suppliers next batch will be better until then I’m having to sand, seal then...

    Offcuts

Anything under 400mm long that isn’t exotic hard wood gets cut in half & goes to the old couple down the road whos heating & hot water is via a wood burner. Having the workshop cluttered up with offcuts is counter productive so I’m pretty ruthless when chucking out, particularly redwood.
