• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Everyone should read this , it's quite wonderful. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Planted_Trees If planting in really bad ground, a post hole borer is useful, especially if there's a clay/silt pan to break through. Bore a hole backfill it with reasonable soil and your trees have a...

Crafty use of Google maps' satellite imagery?

On a slightly different tack, the chap who repaired my washing machine told me he'd turned up with the required part at a commercial firm to fix a washing machine. The owner knew nothing about it, the machine had gone wrong and messaged head office with the fault code.

Crafty use of Google maps' satellite imagery?

Long pre Google, some 40 years ago we knew not to take taxis when going on holiday - the cab firms employed local petty crooks. They'd make pleasant conversation then tell their friends that you'd gone, how long for and where you lived.

    You chicken chaps....

Bearing in mind they've probably been fed and looked after for six months I'm surprised it's only double. I once had a maran cockerel killed by a fox, it was warm when I picked it up. It had I believe put up a good fight, the carcass was torn to shreds but the legs were untouched. I cut them...

    Bosch Routers

I have two, a 1600w and a 1700w. One is 34 years old, the other I suspect is older. Non existent fine adjustment, but they are bulletproof, both made in the USA. I've not seen anything anywhere like that size in Bosch in recent years.

Australian word of the year, 2024

It's been reported that Oxbridge and other top universities have been given the OK for open book exams and allowing students to take exam papers home with them to complete. It will give ethnic minority students a better chance of passing, apparently.

    Anyone ever seen a polecat?

We were on the deck having a beer or twelve one evening at my sister's bach (holiday place) on the Coromandel, NZ. I heard an owl call - so I cupped my hands and made an owl call. A minute or two later it called again. My nephew was about six and he asked if I could really talk to moreporks...

    Spindle gouges

Certainly, but the steel is only in contact with the abrasive for second or two, and with little weight behind it. If you're reshaping something, that's different.

Surely one of the reasons for using a jig and a constant setting is you remove so little metal you won't burn anything anyway?

    dishwasher

Years ago my mother turned up and said she'd bought me a present - a spare washing machine (as you do). A Creda, it was like new, she'd paid £20 for it in an auction. OK, I thought, but why do we need a "spare" washing machine. We had a basement at the time so installed it there. It was...
