• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Cutting Veneer

There are multiple way to avoid or remove this if you have it, to leave it is just lazy, either in properly adjusting the laser cut so it does not occur, preparing your sample appropriately so it does not occur, or in failing to remove it through sanding if it does happen. It is not inevitable...

    Tickle your fancy?...

Last sold a complete set for £2,750 in 2019. The same number of sets still exist, they are no rarer, so seems a bit steep to expect £4,000 now. Inflation calculator suggest £3,334 as an inflation adjusted price......

    Cutting Veneer

Generally a backing (front?) over the top of the veneer (masking tape or veneer tape), or sandwich it between sheets of thin card. Playing with the power of the laser can help, reducing to a bare minimum. Having said that, I have an 80w laser so upping the speed is also possible for me. I have...

    Cutting Veneer

A cheap laser cutter will cut veneers into all sorts of shapes no problem, although some may consider that cheating....... accurate to an insane degree.

Does this look like an old-style fuse box?

But can you negotiate the price of the rewire off the purchase price? We had a wired fuse box in our first house - nothing like waking up to the smell of burning plastic to make you change your mind on the price of safety. We were lucky, caught it before any serious damage, but it could have...

Does this look like an old-style fuse box?

Lets just say it certainly doesn't look like a new one, so budget for replacing it if looking to work out whether to purchase the property or not, and at least a full wiring inspection if not rewire if it is as old as it looks......

    Space X

Yes and no - there is a really interesting YouTube vid of Neil deGrasse Tyson (US version of Brian Cox but more engaging) addressing exactly this and specifically the advancements made by commercial enterprise as opposed to government funding of space exploration/research. Effectively he makes...

Separating lids from boxes - how do you do yours?

For me personally, I guess it is lack of practice. I get so little time in the workshop that in my head I achieve perfection, but in reality not so much. They are not horrendous, and two I gave as xmas gifts were well received but I still saw the flaws in them where lid and base did not fit as I...

    Space X

Still caught the booster on its return however, which is still a mighty impressive feat!

Separating lids from boxes - how do you do yours?

Thanks chaps. Not sure a handsaw would work for me but I do have a slot cutter for my router somewhere (been using a standard straight bit until now) so could certainly try that method.

Separating lids from boxes - how do you do yours?

There have been some simply stunning examples of boxes lately in the 'what you last made' thread and elsewhere, and the fit and finish always looks excellent. Having been less than successful myself I wondered how people are separating their lids from their bases as it is the step I struggle...

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

After some of the boxes shown here I am somewhat embarrassed by my efforts, but a couple of xmas gifts for work colleagues - apologies for the picture quality, there was a significant time pressure here. I really struggled to get the lid from these for some reason and both nearly went in the bin...

Never assume - stupidity strikes again to accident prone A

Yellow used to be (possibly still is) the 4th wire for 2 way switching. Is it possible someone has swapped an old 2 way switch set-up for a one way 3 wire set-up and simply left the 4th wire connected at the other end?

I like the ones with the maple tops - very art deco, which is not a style I usually admire! Do the maple slips that form the lip go down to the base inside, and how did you cut the circle on the front?

    C-cubed at its worst

On the bright side, there is a 'return' button on it ;)

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

Playing with my laser cutter, this one is not stuck down to the backer board yet, but was more a proof of principle in terms of image manipulation and made with the coloured veneers I had to hand, hence the grain direction not being consistent either - this was originally a stained glass image...

    Zurich Cycling Would Championship.

The main advantage to having a team in a stage race/grand tour is that they can protect the team leader, specifically shelter/drafting but more importantly going at a pace the team leader dictates rather than the pace a rival rider/team dictates. If you are on the edge (and these guys know their...

    Jay Blades Home Fix

Just drop him completely and let the craftspeople do the meet and greet as they sometimes do now - JB is hardly essential to the programme (although I watch it for the repair skills, not the sentimentality, so may not be the target demographic!)
