• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Don't ever do this......

We have had a slow drain for a while now and rodding has not cleared it so it was time to get digging. Downside is we live in an old house and this means multiple eejits have had a bash at 'modifying' bits and pieces including the drains. The run from the soil stack to the edge of our property...

    multi-tool recommendations

I have been after a multi-tool for a while and after doing lots of looking finally decided on the Leatherman Wave. Allegedly a premium brand for a premium price. However many of the reviews seem to suggest Leatherman have been cutting corners recently and build quality has suffered - the black...

    Bearings - where to buy?

I am idly considering making a thickness sander - I have salvaged the motor and pulley blocks from an old pillar drill and there are various plans on the web - the ones at woodgears being a good bet. What I am not clear on however is how to mount the shaft. I think I need pillow blocks to hold...

Quick but urgent query on finishing

Chaps - got a dilemma, Need to make 2 xmas presents in a hurry, need to use materials I already have or materials from the usual DIY sheds as it HAS to be done by Monday (long story, maybe tell it later). On searching I have iroko, oak, small amount of maple and tiny amount of ABW. None of it...

    Rotten window repair

I have known about the state of the windows in our house since we moved in 2 years ago and have been slowly working my way round the house. Last year was the front sash's, this year other jobs have gotten in the way a bit so have left it a little late to start on the back windows before the...

    Gauge blocks

I am trying to source some accurate metric bar to act as a thickness gauge. I would ideally like to be able to buy them individually with length not being too important - I guess 20cm or so but not critical. Thickness 4mm - 12mm. If I search for 'gauge blocks' I get engineering spec sets at...

    Vacuum Pump

I have the chance to acquire a small electric vacuum pump. It states on the base that it pulls 1 bar. When I place my finger over the inlet there is suction, but it doesn't feel very strong (although I have no idea how much 1 bar is supposed to feel like). I am wondering if it would be suitable...

Why? Why do they do it?

You know the situation - you identify some nice fittings, uhmm and ahh over the price 'cos they are expensive but eventually go for them anyway. The item arrives and it looks lovely. You then fit said item and find that the hardware that cost several pounds has been supplied with screws that...

    Victorian Bodge!

I have been putting this job off for ages, but finally I have to start tackling the hall stairs and landing. The skirting up the stairs in particular has been an issue since we moved in - a huge split/gap all the way up the stairs which has at some point been filled with buckets of caulk, filler...

Plastering and cracks - to be expected?

We have recently had out hallway and stairs plastered. Good plasterer, used him for a long time (several houses) and no problem with his work previously. The hall and stairs are big - was a 5 day job to do a skim over the original horsehair plaster. All onto brick walls underneath rather than...

    Finally some woodwork!

Yes, finally I have done a job that involves some woodwork! Nothing spectacular mind you, rather mundane and basic in fact, but it has been so long since I did anything involving wood it has been a real pleasure. I help out at my sons scout group - very small group and although full of...

Castings - how good is good enough?

Paid a visit to Axminster today and came away with one of their trade series drill presses - actually went to view the larger of the two bench mounted models but on seeing it decided it was too big for my needs and bought the smaller one! Seems very robust and a major step up compared to the old...

    Introduction

Hi All, thought it was about time I posted! Was on the original TWH with the same username but been a bit swamped with house bashing and renovations not to mention a relatively new job so haven't been as vocal as perhaps I once was. Must try harder! Latest job is renovating the sash windows in...
