• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Robert Sorby Pro Edge bits and pieces

Caution on the 'No Bluing' assumption using the Pro Edge. Knife sharpening for instance is in my experience very fraught with risk where there is so little blade material to dissipate heat. The Pro Edge became my 'go to' system for 90% of my turning gouge sharpening with no problems (with a...

First attempts of turning shallow bowls/trays.

They all obviously do the job they were made for, the last one as with most new ventures resulting from progress up the not insignificant learning curve.

First attempts of turning shallow bowls/trays.

Producing a wide flat surface with a bowl gouge is not easy due to having to drag the gouge along the rest and maintain a constant protrusion. Once you have obtained a reasonable surface with the bowl gouge, you might want to try the method shown below with a flat scraper to refine the...

    Which drive centre?

With the spring loaded drives, on most 'firmer' wood species it is possible to remove the workpiece from the lathe and remount if needed and pick up the centre quite successfully, something that is more problematic with a simple cross drive. Conversely with 'softer' wood species beware heavy...

I had to back away from "showing a friends youngster how to start woodturning" when a parent challenged me whilst giving a safety brief about rotating objects and dangers. What stripper?

If stripping was a must I would endeavour to locate someone who could Blast them with Plastic or Shell stripper, should only need light finishing sanding afterwards. Save any problems from liquid stripper chemicals penetrating the wood and certainly easier and quicker than attempting hand sanding.
