• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

What Birds Have You Seen Today

I preface by saying that I am cheating, but... I saw one of these yesterday for the first time ever, a Scarlet Tanager (not my picture). The one I saw was a more intense red, and darker black wings. Below are a few pics from some years back. A lucky camera shot... Ospreys have made a big...

    Unusual winter weather.

Regarding the topic of Mountain Lions; I have lived in PA since 1983, originally in Central PA (now NE PA). In Central PA, there was always much talk of Mountain Lions even back then. Some of the locals would claim they saw them, and report it to the local Game Commission, who always...

    Unusual winter weather.

Well... possibly, but I am not sure where that was filmed. I suspect it was much farther West in PA, or even possibly in West Virginia.

Yes, Lancaster is down in the low country, out of the mountains... much better soil down there. Nothing but rocks up here. I have 14 acres and can't put a shovel in the ground anywhere on my property... Not a problem unless you want to plant some crops... P.S. I used to do a lot on...

    Unusual winter weather.

So, I did a little research on the topic of Black Bears in PA. As it turns out, we are no longer at the top in the lower 48. "Pennsylvania has been known to have the largest black bear population in the lower 48 states, particularly highlighted by a record harvest of 4,350 bears in 2011...

    Unusual winter weather.

Gentlemen, I hope you will indulge me this story from my youth on the topic of camping... My friend Kevin Schumacher (RIP) and I often "camped-out" together. We were perhaps the wilder and more reckless of our collection of friends. What we did was actually considered "backpacking", as...

What tools did you buy for yourself for xmas.

Here's what I bought for myself, and a very good purchase, IMO. Very handy for repairs of metalworking calipers, dial & test indicators, etc.

Very Good French Folding Blade, Ôpinel.

IMO, some of the best and most practical knives made for shop use & EDC. They take a super sharp edge and last a long time. I have several, and have carried one every day for forty years. The blade is, shall we say, now changing shape due to repeated sharpening, but still a favorite.

    Grab Handle

Good morning Mr. Duke, If you have a propane torch (a Colonial torch, not a flashlight), or better yet some MAPP gas, and some basic tools and skills, you can solder it back together. Basically, you create a scarf joint and solder it. It usually creates a strong bond. In fact, a properly...
