• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Tend to agree with you Mike. I can't see how it'll work with very thin plate Japanese saws either so I think I do as you suggest and stick to a bevel edged chisel to pare away the offending material - Rob

    Not a full restoration in any way, shape or form, but simply a really good spruce up and attempting to ensure a closer mating fit of the frog to the body: The front underside of the frog (arrowed) wasn't really flat, so the burr that had taken all the pressure (hence shiny) over the decades...

    I use the Veritas jig for that with the 'barrel' shaped roller, applying an even number of strokes each side using forefingers to apply pressure. The camber is barely perceptible but it's there - Rob

    I was working at a fairly dire job at Wilton Carpet Factory, prior to moving to the MoD. The noise of the huge carpet looms was deafening and constant, but management ordered them shut down for a two minute silence and the whole factory went quiet - Rob

    Hopefully :ROFLMAO: I think the handle/tote aren't original as they didn't fit properly and I suspect they were changed sometime in the past. The rear handle nut is also too small for the hole and when it's fully tightened the nut surface isn't coplanar with the top...there's a wee 'step' on...

    I thought that the handle/tote were Rosewood, but having taken off the handle and sanded the underside it's Beech, so definitely post WW2. Cutter is the original pattern as well, dating up to the mid 50's when it was altered - Rob...who may make some new ones out of proper, pukka Rosewood

    Thanks Andy. Looking briefly through the linkie you kindly sent it's got a Lateral Lever No.4 pattern (1952>57) and a Frog pattern which ended in 1956, so if I were to plump for half way between those dates, around 1954 seems to be a reasonable guestimation? I'll do a bit more sleuthing...

    I've just received this little beauty in the post: It appears to have unvarnished Rosewood handles and a hight front knob and with that style of machined frog I'm guessing it's quite old. Hopefully @AndyT could shed some light on it's approximate date of manufacture? - Rob

    Most accent detail stuff on my projects (catches etc) is African Blackwood, which is easier to work if you treat it like metal so rather than use a chisel, I use a metalwork file; works a treat - Rob

    Home grown has to be English Walnut and imported would probably be Teak, though it's a bit difficult these days to get hold of the genuine article. Having never used it, I'll be interested to see what the American variety is like, having bought a few sticks: ...amongst a few other odds...
