• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

WIP - The English Woodworker's new backed stool

I've had a rethink and won't be going. The event is good with some great names (Philly Edwards won't be there) but it's held in a hall about the size of a school gymnasium. You can literally walk round it in ten minutes, see what there is to see, have a natter at the various exhibitors stands...

Done- hammer handle for Japanese gennou hammer

I didn't realise that it's a 'thing' with Gennou hammers not to fit a wedge(s) in the head...or maybe it's just the posh artisan ones? I've just checked mine in the 'shop and it has both a steel and wooden wedge. I don't think I'd trust using any sort of Birmingham screwdriver without the head...

About time to set up the dust collector to the 10" Delta bandsaw.

Was about to mention the same. @Steve Maskery is yer bloke - Rob

    Smart meter

Our 'leccy is with Octopus, who informed us a while ago that we needed a new meter, which they duly installed; it also contains a SM but at the same time, the gas meter was also replaced with a smart one, so as I understand it the actual important bit is inside the meter wot talks via t'interweb...

WIP - The English Woodworker's new backed stool

I also met him a couple of times, once at one of Peter Sefton's Open Days (alas no more) and the other was at the vast show held at Cressing Temple Barn a few years ago. Sadly there doesn't appear to be a large woodwork event held anymore in the South of England - Rob

    2 measuring questions .

To be honest, I haven't used those pointy or mushroom tips yet, but one day they'll be just the very thing to make an inside measurement. The one's I have used a fair bit: ...small ball ends, which can be used with the extension rods - Rob

    2 measuring questions .

It's just so easy for initial measurements and the setting on the wheel gauge or adjustable square is almost guaranteed to be totally accurate. A load of comments which are completely valid have made your thread 'wander' and haven't really answered the two questions you asked. I have attempted...

    2 measuring questions .

Easy peasy, 'cos what you want is a set of these bad boys: ...wot I recently re-discovered and they're absolutely invaluable. This set is in brass from Axminster and is quite old, but there's a vast selection on Amazon in both metric and imperial sizes. So I want to set f'instance, a wheel...

    What size screw is this?

I'll have a delve into my screw tub and see if I've got anything - Rob

Depends on the type of stuff you make, but you'll find that there's a couple of us (moi inc) on WH2 who have no use for a tablesaur and use a bandsaw(s) instead. I've had two tablesaurs and have got rid of them - Rob

    Small cyclone system...WIP

My little cyclone project is now finished: Nothing terribly difficult about the trolly, pretty basic glue n'screw construction: It trundles around the 'shop dead easy and will hold a goodly amount of dust, dirt n'detritus - Rob

    Small cyclone system...WIP

I have the magnet PRV on my big water butt collector which works fine, but I need to fish for the jam jar lid inside the barrel when it blows. It's connected to the underside of the lid with a short length of string and I use a bent piece of wire to retrieve it - Rob

    Clear Coloured Finish Recommendations

As @AndyT found out, a water based Acrylic varnish from Polyvine is one very good alternative and Malc's ukulele finish is another. This is a three quarter length shot of 'Britta's Cabinet' or more correctly, SWIMBO's cabinet: ...which I made a few years ago and finished with Polyvine...

    Veneered wall art

I'd agree with comments thus far, suffice to say that at 1000 x 1700mm that's a big lump of veneering! I've done plenty of veneering as such but not marquetry, however I have the same or similar AirPress bag/pump as HOJ, but just having checked the size of the mdf base board in the bag, it's...

    Small cyclone system...WIP

Seems to be collecting the vast majority of small dust n'debris which is fine. I've been fiddling around fine tuning the PRV for the last hour playing around with different strength and length of springs; I seem to have found one which works well as the valve opens when the nozzle is obstructed...

    Small cyclone system...WIP

After tea, I lashed the hoses in place with a few strips of tape and gave it a trial run. The PRV worked well, but the choice of spring is critical; I needed to install a slightly stronger one to get it to work correctly: After a swift pass around the 'shop and bench, the proof of the...

    Knife handle help

Most if not all Japanese chef's knives use a ferrule of some sort (usually horn) with a wooden handle then tapped onto the tang. Many use Magnolia but it really depends on which firm or artisan made them; I have a small veggie knife with a Walnut handle. The rivet thing is used on Western...

    Small cyclone system...WIP

Having ordered the 60 litre barrel yesterday from the Bay of Fleas, DPD delivered it this morning which I thought wasn't at all shabby! Pretty impressed actually by the quality of these barrels as it's the first time I've seen one in the flesh: The cyclone and PRV were fitted to the top...

    Knife handle help

Agreed Pete, proper 'old skool', slow setting epoxy is just about impregnable and once it's been correctly mixed, applied and cured nothing's going to shift it - Rob
