• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Is this board too bowed for a drawer front?

Remember the Bubinga cabinet recently finished? If you read a short way through page 1 of the thread, I had exactly the same problem as you have now. I planed the bit of wood flat a couple of times but the stress didn't disappear and it kept bowing, as your's probably will do too. There is...

Is this board too bowed for a drawer front?

If the bow decides to return you'll find out about it in around a week's time....just keep on checking it with your straight edge - Rob

    Small scraps in thickness planer?

Sleds are good and work well, but it's the length of the piece going through it that's important as the input and output rollers need to be able to 'grab' it. If they're too short you won't be able to push them through, although I have used a 6mm thick, fairly wide offcut to push stuff through...

Is this board too bowed for a drawer front?

What MikeG said above. It'll plane flat, but if as is likely, the bow was caused by the release of stress in the original timber (when cut from a bigger plank) if will come back and you won't ever get rid of it. My advice is to save yourself a load of grief is not to use it - Rob

    Newbie here!

Welcome to WH2 but I think you may have come to the wrong place. The forum doesn't really discuss kitchen knives, although it does happen very occasionally and sharpening blades of any sort is a topic that's strictly 'off limits' - Rob

    Does brass "work harden"?

That means that your file is also slightly blunt, as well as the brass work hardening. You can easily get away with used files (to a point) on mild steel, but ideally brass demands a brand new one - Rob

Making a Rob Cosman kerf extender

You may well find that with a very thing plate (made say, from an old Japanese saw blade) on the extender you make, it'll buckle n'bend as you start to hit it with tapometer. The ones that RC uses for Western saws use much thicker steel - Rob

    Joint Practice

True! There was a programme some time ago on the televisual box where students in a lab built a model temple with trad jointing and subjected it to a fairly substantial seismic earthquake. The joints 'moved' and the whole structure (verticals not anchored, but 'loose') migrated across the test...

It's now changed from a decent 'user' with grotty handles to something that's a little better: ...and the front knob with 'V' cut detailing: As mentioned above, it's not a full restoration project or anything like, but a general clean up, thead oiling (never been done) as well as a new...

The plane was a gift Andy and the handle/knob were horrid, worm eaten, covered in thick gloopy, badly applied stain so they had to go, but an hour's worth of bandsawing, rasp work together with a bit of powered sanding resulted in: ...this; slightly fatter than the original, which was too...

I hate making handles for planes...probably one of the hardest things to do when it comes to fitting the angled rod, but by COP: ...yesterday I'd got this far. The amount off faffing around it takes is unbelievable; mating frog surfaces cleaned up with a dowel dunked in valve grinding paste...

Making a Rob Cosman kerf extender

Tend to agree with you Mike. I can't see how it'll work with very thin plate Japanese saws either so I think I do as you suggest and stick to a bevel edged chisel to pare away the offending material - Rob

    Cereal shovel...

We've discovered the frozen fruit range from Lidl so each week I grab a few bagfuls of 'Breakfast Topper' (assorted fruits) Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, Cherries (fave!!!) and Mango Your breakfast bowl is similar to mine but no dates although I ought to have a few nuts/seeds on top...

A bit of work with the Disston D7 and twenty mins on the P/T and bandsaw: ....and I have a couple of nice blanks of East Indian Rosewood, with enough left over if @Malc2098's FuF pays a call:ROFLMAO:- Rob

Not a full restoration in any way, shape or form, but simply a really good spruce up and attempting to ensure a closer mating fit of the frog to the body: The front underside of the frog (arrowed) wasn't really flat, so the burr that had taken all the pressure (hence shiny) over the decades...

Hardest part of hand planing for me is planing edge square to face. Tips?

I use the Veritas jig for that with the 'barrel' shaped roller, applying an even number of strokes each side using forefingers to apply pressure. The camber is barely perceptible but it's there - Rob

    Seven Heirlooms - You'll never guess……!

You're not the only one Al, waaaaay over my head! @Malc2098 is being overly generous calling her the CuF; I get frequent visitations from the FuF:ROFLMAO: - Rob

    Where were you …

I was working at a fairly dire job at Wilton Carpet Factory, prior to moving to the MoD. The noise of the huge carpet looms was deafening and constant, but management ordered them shut down for a two minute silence and the whole factory went quiet - Rob

Hopefully :ROFLMAO: I think the handle/tote aren't original as they didn't fit properly and I suspect they were changed sometime in the past. The rear handle nut is also too small for the hole and when it's fully tightened the nut surface isn't coplanar with the top...there's a wee 'step' on...
