• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Secret hinge boxes....

It's actually quite a good video and isn't too long. The boxes themselves are easy enough to do with dovetails but can be a bit 'fiddly' until you get into the swing of making a few. Making the dowels and setting up the router to make the hinge recesses both take time but it's worth it if you...

    Chucks

That's natural Stuart 'cos they want your dosh! If you can get to AxHQ and see/hold/play with the kit you'll probably be impressed. I've had my Ax lathe and chuck for years with no complaints. In fact the lathe (newer version) was newish at the time and was recommended to me personally by Mark...

    I'm not OTT.

I had my Defender treated by a guy who worked at the old Greenham Common airbase in one of the units. He apparently removed (pressure blasting of some sort) the original underseal installed at the time of construction (which he said was paper thin) and applied a chemical concoction of some sort...

    I'm not OTT.

Same here; proper deluge in the night for about twenty minutes. Sparkling motor this morning. I'm not obsessive about cleaning cars @Lons but when we had our Defender some years ago it was scrubbed and cleaned most weekends, inc the underside, for which I used a power washer with an 'L' shaped...

    Chucks

Thanks for that Pete, it was quite a while ago that I looked on the LV site - Rob

    Chucks

Biased of course, but the Ax chucks are extremely good and imported into Canadia by Lee Valley (or were the last time I looked). I use the Evolution SK114 available with different threads to suit your lathe headstock. Essential also to have the extra long chuck key for turning big stuff - Rob

    What I have fixed today

Those copper tube thingies would drive me round the bend; you may as well camp out on Westminster Bridge if that's your bag. I've gone for a much more refined, acceptable 'tinkle' all year round and have had several furin bells dotted around. This one in brass of Mount Fuji emits the gentlest...

    I Do Like Facebook Marketplace

Agreed, there's a lot of wear on those drawer sides and looking at the considerable ink spillage on the interior, (quill or steel nibbed pens dunked into an ink pot) I'd say it it places the date of it at some point in the 19th Century, but very difficult to be exact. The chair looks sound but...

New 'Foot' for Parkside PSS 310 Sander

Nice fix! Lots of folk over here are very familiar with the 'Parkside' brand from Lidl (I do a load of shopping there each week) and speak very favourably about it; years ago when I worked for Axminster Tools, one of the chaps who knew his stuff mentioned that Parkside gear, (for the price it...

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; glazing, waxing and finally DUN n'DUSTED!

I beg to differ; it's horrible stuff. Sometimes, with an über sharp plane iron and looking very carefully at the direction of the grain, it will behave itself but those occasions are few and far between; you only have to hit a patch of grain going slightly the wrong way and you're in 'tear out...

    Secret hinge boxes....

No problem chaps. It's a very simple technique, exactly the same as a pencil sharpener, but it's fiddly, time consuming and exasperating when it doesn't go quite right, or the dowels are under size. However, by adding an extra aluminium shim (0.08mm) the dowels come out very slightly over size...

    Secret hinge boxes....

The 'dowels' start off as square blanks, roughly 7 or 7.5mm, which are then turned into a hexagon section: ...in a jig in the vice. A point is then made on the disc sander: ...and the blank pushed through. This particular little bit of Swiss Pear was fished out of the waste bin for a...

    Secret hinge boxes....

Agreed about the Bubinga Ian, but all the stuff in the water butt bin is offcuts. As yet, there's no current small stuff from your excellent Victorian Mahogany, but in due course there will be. Today and yesterday was spent messing about with a trial dowel jig in Bubinga and making the 'real...

    Secret hinge boxes....

After a good old rummage this morning, hidden inside this assorted pile of offcuts : ...of Walnut, Oak, Olive Ash, Paduk, Mahogany (not 19th cent Ian) Swiss Pear, London Plane & American Cherry are an unknown number of secret hinge boxes, popularised by Rob Cosman (like him or loathe...

WIP - my version of Dr Al’s travel tool chest and workbench

Regarding finishes on drawers, I just do as AndyT has suggested, that's to polish the front, top, bottom and sides (joints only) having masked off the dovetails. If the drawer interiors are to be finished a couple of coats of Lemon Oil usually suffice but I never do the bottoms, especially if...

    What have you "lost" today...?

This reminds me Andy of an incident that happened fairly recently. I won't regale it again as I'm gasping for a mug of coffee, but if you've got a few moments, the tale of 'The Great Escape' can be read here - Rob

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; glazing, waxing and finally DUN n'DUSTED!

Whilst I'm waiting to pick up the glass at the end of the month, I reckoned it would be a good idea to hang the cabinet sans door/glass as there's less weight and the door isn't liable to swing out during the process. If you chaps recollect from some time ago, the back panel was bowed and still...

Fix dovetail screwups before or after glueup?

I doubt he would have told RC, but he would probably have delighted mentioning it to others - Rob

Fix dovetail screwups before or after glueup?

That's a disappointingly unhelpful, hurtful comment and imo completely out of context with the general ethos of WH2 - Rob
