• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Fix dovetail screwups before or after glueup?

Cosman has a video somewhere showing how he does these repairs to his shovetails, but in all honesty, he shouldn't have to but as I said earlier, these things do happen. On the almost completed current project in Bubinga there were plenty of things that went pear shaped (and were subsequently...

    What I have fixed today

I fished around in the 'shop waste bin and recovered a bit of the old spine cardboard that I used to repair two of the tattiest corners: ...shown clamped and the tabs were cut and folded over once the spring cramps had been removed. With a final bit of titivating (for those that remember a...

Fix dovetail screwups before or after glueup?

These things happen; I'd glue a thin slither to the tail thicker than the gap to be filled and pare down to fit once the glue's fully cured - Rob

    Agreed, rather good - Rob

    What I have fixed today

The starch paste (+3%PVA) has pretty much set so the pad (now stuck together) of washi shown above was covered with an oddment of hand printed stuff left over from another job: This was then stuck onto the spine and the excess folded down and stuck to the front and back boards: ...and then...

    What I have fixed today

Nope Andy, this is just something that's quite nice to potter about with; to do it seriously takes a lot of expertise and a fair amount of kit - Rob

    What I have fixed today

I first saw washi paper some years ago on 'The Repair Shop' where the book repair bloke had folders of odds n'ends of the stuff and he explained how incredibly strong it is. What's more amazing is that there are hundreds of different varieties and types (like Japanese chisels) so it can be a...

    What I have fixed today

SWIMBO is very keen on her Japanese netsuke and managed to purchase this volume recently from a Fleabay seller in Scotland: ...'The Signature Book of Netsuke, Inro and Ojime Artists in Photographs' dating from the 70's and although the inside pages are fine, the book itself has had a 'life'...

What size chisels do you use the most?

'France first passed a law adopting the metric system on April 7, 1795, and later officially established the finalized platinum standards as legal measures on December 10, 1799'. Are you sure you've got your dates right Mike?:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: - Rob

What size chisels do you use the most?

Agree with wot @AndyT said above but I quite often reach for wider ones (25mm and up) when cleaning out a corner(s) for say glass or a panel as the wider blade gives a bearing surface and enables a straighter line to be pared - Rob

    B17 flyover

Maybe Rog; if you look at the cooling intakes between the engines and fuselage of the aircraft in my pic, the Sturgeon has them as well, as did the Mosquito. Also the tail in my aircraft pic could have a central one but is obscured in the pic as it's hidden by the fuselage. Dunno, but next...

    B17 flyover

My old dad, dead centre in the pic with the rest of his crew: ...used to service these aircraft at RNAS Hal-Far in Malta, during the middle 50's. He told me years ago that the aircraft in the pic was a Shackleton but I spent some time last night Googling and I now have my doubts. It...

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; glazing, waxing and finally DUN n'DUSTED!

This morning, SWIMBO 'asked' for a pic of her cabinet (as yet unfinished) so that she can send it to a friend in 'distant climes' as part of a email conversation: The door is shown loosely fitted (hinges but no screws) with two of the six shelves and of course it'll be another week or so...

Given to me as a gift . A Stanley No 4

Agreed Bob, he was one of the best and would always go far beyond what was necessary to help out a friend. I've forgotten the number of times he was here in my 'shop in Wilton and invariably turned up with a home made chocolate cake (which he'd baked); we always had a slice or three with a mug...
