• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

I have just finished making a cold frame for my parents. I picked up some cedar planks at Yandles and had some old plastic from a greenhouse. Its far from perfect, but should be quite servicable.

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

I notice on the conversation people saying how long it takes to set up conventional planer blades to the right level. I haven’t persuaded my “investment manager” that I need to upgrade my planer yet so have an old scheppach one. I use some adjustable jigs like these to quickly and repeatable set...

    Edge-glueing Kingspan

The best tape I have found for insulation boards is aluminium tape, designed for ducting.

    Mike's ext'n & renovation (solar panels)

How about starting with a cedar strip canoe? Then you could build up to a boat.

    Chairs - Done!

Nick, I can’t remember if you have a CAD mode of the chair. If you do, would it be worth doing two models. One with even spacing at the bottom but square shoulders to see what it looks like overall. It could be compared to a second version with the non square shoulders and even spacing at the...

    Heat Treatment Oven

Thanks Al. I do find it a fascinating read. Whilst I don’t ever expect to be building a heat treatment oven I am interested in how you are doing it and picking up useful tips along the way. Thank you.

I do like the look of that chair. Very smart and a lot of skill going into making it.

    Heat Treatment Oven

Fascinating thread. I was intrigued by the photo above. Is the use of the ruler a way of ensuring you are drilling perpendicular to the pipe? If so that’s a new trick I didn’t know. Thanks

Anyone used up cut spiral router bit

I invested in 12.7mm uncut spiral bit from Wealdens and whilst it wasn’t cheap I don’t regret it as it is a really nice bit to use and great for mortising type applications. Buy exepensive, buy once! https://www.wealdentool.com/acatalog/

    Drawer retention device

    Thanks Gary, that’s great.

    Drawer retention device

Hi Gary, That is exactly the sort of thing I had been trying to make. Do you have any details of how you did the pivot? Did you put in a spring? Do you have any photos of the parts you made? Thanks Mark

    Chairs - Done!

I think the chair looks very smart and am interested to learn how you make them. Can I ask a numpty question for my own education? The corner bracing at the front of the seat goes up tight against the front leg. At the back the bracing has a deliberate gap round the rear leg. Why the...

    Drawer retention device

I think that would be a neat simple solution. My hesitation is what is the minimum length I could get away with? As the drawer is narrow front to back I am keen to make this as short front to back as I can to get as much drawer opening as possible. I guess I could use it sideways, but it...

    Drawer retention device

That is a neat idea and far simpler than the what I had been working on. This is what I came up with this afternoon. I think it will need a spring in it to make it work properly.

    Glue up when cold

I just did my glue up in the kitchen having put some cardboard down first to protect the floor from drips.

    Drawer retention device

Ian thanks, that’s an interesting idea. I was wondering about Adrian’s ribbon idea, but not sure if it would get in the way when closing the drawer. I half recall the Rob may have done something small and neat at some point, but I can’t quite remember what. I have started wondering if I could...

    Drawer retention device

The top surface will be 19mm thick. I was wondering if I could route out a recess in that, but it doesn’t give me a lot of depth to play with.

    Drawer retention device

Thanks for the ideas about the buttons. I am not quite sure how to make that work with the design I am building. The plan is to make wooden rectangle (top, bottom and two sides) and the drawer just to slide in the middle. I was going to make the drawer with blind dovetails at the front and...

Yes just wood running on wood. I had wondered about metal under mount slides but couldn’t find anything short enough.

    Drawer retention device

I am in the process of making a small shelf with a drawer in it. The drawer is only going to be about 170mm front to back. I am keen that the drawer has some way of stopping it fall out if pulled too far. Can you point me to a design of how to do this please? Many thanks, Mark
