• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

How do you light you fire?

Well, if it doesn't selectively draw in oxygen, and isn't leaking back into the room, it must be drawing in all the components of air, which would cause fresh air to be drawn in from somewhere to replace it, so not depleting the oxygen. The more likely explanation is that it was allowing some...

How do you light you fire?

Oxygen depletion seems unlikely to me, unless the stove is leaking into the room (in which case you havd a much more serious problem !). If it draws air from the room, then uses the oxygen for combustion, it is surely not selectively drawing in oxygen ?

How do you light you fire?

I guess this depends on the house. My colleague upgraded his house insulation to passivhaus standards (close to a rebuild), and an external air supply would be needed to keep a woodburner, but it was not sensible really as lighting it would have made the house into an oven ! Our house is...

How do you light you fire?

The book above is a bit scant on detail of laying the fire for top down; so the "kindling" is on top of the logs - but what kindling, sticks but what to get them going. I tried a few times in my small Stovax, and the problem to avoid seemed to be the top burning away without setting fire to the...

Paint for handrails / high traffic surfaces

Just to report back. I went with the F&B water based full gloss. I also bought their recommended primer/undercoat. With one coat of the undercoat and one of gloss, it looks OK. Not as smooth as oil based gloss, but flows a lot better than those I've tried before. Also, after just those two...

That does look a nice result. I've very much enjoyed quietly lurking along with this thread ... thanks for sharing.

    Essential kitchen tools - 2024

Check you have the latest advice for where you are. The trend now is caps left on (including screw caps on wine bottles), and not to crush cans / plastic bottles. Probably changes over time with technology for sorting.

    Essential kitchen tools - 2024

While in Greece recently on a beach not cleaned for the tourists, there is an enormous amount of bits of plastic amongst the sand if you take the time to look closely. Of the identifiable bits, there are a lot of plastic bottle caps. For recycling purposes, the cap will get lost and end up not...

The worst safety glasses I've ever had the misfortune to buy. But SUPERB service from Uvex

I rather like the Voltex ones, which are available in the usual "ready reader" type prescriptions. Saves juggling glasses and scratching expensive reading glasses.

    Jeyes fluid

I think Jeyes changed quite some time ago. I have an old tin of it I found in the garage when we moved in 20+ years ago. It seems to take very little of it to clear the algae from our conservatory roof, which is all I use it for. The old stuff is some sort of phenolic coal tar derivative. I...

    Jeyes fluid

Since when were bins meant to be clean ? They are for putting rubbish in. How did we get to thinking we need to have bins cleaned, moss removed from the roof and however many other utterly futile activities ?

    Your favourite listenings......

I love Irish singers that still sound so Irish in song. A bit of a blast from the past I just stumbles upon on YouTube: Mary Dillon (Cara's sister) with Deanta.

    They are back!

:ROFLMAO: Report it to the nearest police station ! Unless it was flying faster than the speed limit, little chance of any action.

    Rant

I'm not sure how introducing insurers into the equation helps. Now you have to pay for their salaries and profits as well as the service. You will probably have to pay according to their assessment of the risk you present, so leaving some people locked out. Not insurance but pension companies...

    Rant

Anything totally free at point of use is liable to abuse / overuse by a few. It also encorages the attitude that as it is "free", the user should be pathetically grateful for whatever service they do receive. It is not free; we all pay just not at point of use. At the same time, I hate the idea...

    Rant

I visited my Dad on a ward for the elderly recently. I would not expect to have to complain that it is unacceptable to have mains plug sockets hanging from their trunking by the cables. Nor that it is not OK to serve elderly people their dinner using the ladle you just picked up off the floor...

    Wellingtonia trees

From my office window, I can see what is allegedly the oldest Christmas tree in the UK. A Wellingtonia planted at Wrest Park by the De Grey family in 1856, it's about 30m high. It was dug up and brought inside for Christmas, then re-planted until it got too big. Don't know how they propagated...

Blue handled Stanley bevel edged chisels.

Oh, I have a set of the blue handled Marples chisels, were my Grandad's. They are pretty good, but I do tend to reach for the older ones - Fuluse (mark of Cooper & sons of Sheffield, defunct) and old- more often, probably because of the wooden handles.
