• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I'm not convinced it is a bloom from the leather as it looks to match the grime on the rails under the weaving. It looks rather like many an old chair, fallen from favour, demoted to rough jobs e.g, to stand on for decorating, workshop use etc, covered in grime. Cleaning up that leather in situ...

    Retrieved from Dad's

Tidying up at my old Dad's last weekend. He is still with us, but no longer able to live independently. Some things worth retrieving His Stanley no5 - not that I really need another - a vernier, and some stuff for drawing circular things. His work involved making all sorts of 3D objects...

What size chisels do you use the most?

To state the obvious, it rather depends on what you plan to make. I think the first chisel I bought was a 1/4" mortice chisel, but I wanted to make a stool with M&T joints. Rather than spend on expensive chisels, I would buy a means of grinding them first - then buy old chisels for small...

    Locating studs in the wall

Ahh useful. I need to find the joists in the living room ceiling, I have a combined metal/cable/stud detector but it is not reliable. I imagine the plasterboard is fixed with galvanised steel clouts, so was wondering if a magnet might do the trick. I'll give it a try.

    Barn doors shrunk. Now fixed.

Don't overdo it so they won't close come winter ! Lots of wood in our house is quite shrunken at the moment. Gaps around doors a shade wider. Tongue and groove showing a bit more tongue, edged of raised panels showing more. Evidence if it were needed that wood never stops moving, no matter...

    Box junction stupidity

"Rule 174 Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see ‘Road markings’). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic...

    OOPs and some.

I got caught by cameras once on the M1 in Derbyshire. I was driving home late at night, the motorway was almost empty. Speed taken down to 40 mph for "reports of object in the road". I saw the offending item clearly, an electrician's yellow stepladder safely on the hard shoulder (yes, they had...

    OOPs and some.

With cruise control you too can become the person driving at a constant speed in the range 60-69mph in the middle lane of the motorway oblivious to the frustration you are causing. I'm sure the combination of speed cameras and cruise control as a means of avoiding their attention has greatly...

    OOPs and some.

I think that was probably it; the blower "speed control" is usually a group of resistors switched into various series/parallel configurations - I would guess one burned out, so no all the blower speeds worked, at least at the speed it should, but I never noticed. How hard is PWM really ? A 555...

    OOPs and some.

I once (long ago) had a Vauxhall Astra (a mistake). I found quite suddenly that the ignition lights were staying on when the ignition switch was turned fully off, and even with the key removed. Being a bit strapped for cash at the time, I investigated it myself. Pulling the connector off the...

    A groovy little two-day project

How well do the tonguing planes work ? I don't have any woodie versions of those. I do have a couple of tonguing cutters for the #050C, and they do not work well enough to bother with. I used a mortice gauge and a woodie rebate plane instead. I expect the poor performance of the 050C cutters is...

    Speakers

I had always assumed that the high price tag of decent speakers in part reflected quite a lot of work with signal generators, microphones etc to refine on what the theory suggests ? Or maybe that's what they'd like us to think. I'm more of an electronics type. I did design a couple of active...

    More of those lab benches.

Some interesting thoughts. I had not heard of cap iron position affecting edge wear. But - I should say that I'm not overly concerned about the time taken sharpening or how often I do it, I was more thinking of preserving the original Record irons. I've switched to using my #6 instead of the...

    Field fire....

On FB today, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue are saying Glossop fire crews extinguished 15 campfires and 3 disposable barbecues near to Snake pass - in one day. I don't think discarded bottles are the principal issue ! But .. if, like me, you use an illuminated magnifier for fine jobs, do be...

Ahh. Online calculators. That's useful. I am enough of a dinosaur that when I wanted to do this, there were no online calculators. In fact there was no "online" at all yet !

    More of those lab benches.

Still planing up pieces of bench top. And spending a lot of time re-sharpening plane irons. Checking with "Wood identification and use" by Terry Porter, I see this is not my imagination, iroko blunts tools quickly because of mineral inclusions. And you can clearly see white deposits that must...

    Speakers

Hi Pete - how big are they ? I see they are a ported design; do you design the box / porting yourself ? It has always looked a bit of a black art to me !

Making another stool WIP - Finished!

I quite like the handcrafted look that is difficult to get spot on: not looking machine made, but also not looking, well, a bit rough really. I think this is heading in the right direction. I made a 3 legged "milking stool", where the piece of elm I had for the seat was a bit thick, but I was...

Black Walnut turning saw made from kit.

You can make the blades yourself too if you have energy and patience. I have used a strip cut from the plate of a disposable hard point saw - aside from the induction hardened points the rest of the plate is usable spring steel, and can be sawn with a hacksaw and filed into teeth using a stuck...

What should the bevel be on this wooden plough plane?

Looking at the visible gap in front of the top of the wedge, it is not fitting perfectly, with this iron. Perhaps the iron is more tapered than than the wedge was made for.
