• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Black Walnut turning saw made from kit.

I like this walnut one. A couple of nice features; the radius on the shoulder of the tenons so that a bit of variability in blade length is tolerated, and the arms kept straight enough for some long grain to flow all way through. As well as looking pretty. You can, even with only hand tools...

    More of those lab benches.

The last time I glued up iroko I used "Extramite", which I think was a Screwfix cascamite rip off. The door is still in one piece after 20+ years, so maybe that's the way to go. So after the sawing up, yesterday I tackled removing the varnish and whatever else may have penetrated the surface of...

Japanese kebiki marking gauge I made from kit.

Ho ho ! Adrian has a marking gauge looking quite like this, I think 😉 Rather than a nut in a mortice, the screw goes into a brass cross-dowel. The screw is a knurled brass nut, countersunk with a brass contersunk bolt screwed in with a bit of solder paste on the thread and sweated on. The...

How would you make this stopped housing joint?

Ahh yes, the best approach to stopped grooves is to design them out if you can ! As in the original post, move the two dovetails apart a bit, and groove before assembly. I also prefer western style saw. Except for pruning or greenwood work where you can't hold the work well. But I guess that...

How would you make this stopped housing joint?

Having cut something like Andy T's picture except they were sliding dovetails in oak, I did figure out the trick of cutting out the stopped end first to make somewhere for the saw to go. But that still leaves nowhere for the sawdust to go, except for tediously sawing a bit, cleaning out the...

    How square is your square

I have done similar when building a hut. But, you do need to be able to measure distance accurately for that. Alternatively you could strike out a straight baseline (chalk line), and perpendicular reference line by marking a point on your baseline, striking out an arc to a point each side of it...

    Torrential Rain This Evening

There does seem to be an emerging pattern of idiotic use of disposable BBQs, campfires or even fireworks. I do sometimes wonder quite how we got to where we are now. While education ought to be to answer, those disposable BBQ's need to go. People don't seem to realise peat is not...

    Torrential Rain This Evening

We get similar bumps of green moss forming. The birds wait until I've cleaned the conservatory roof, then pull them off and toss them down.

    How square is your square

Aren't you still assuming the base line was drawn straight. It is interesting to consider how you can get to precision from nothing. After all, humans have somehow achieved making straight edges, squares and much more complex things without so much as a straight line to start with. Planing 3...

    More of those lab benches.

We were talking about chemistry lab bench tops the other day. At the weekend I cut up a couple of them, one 1.8m and this one, 2.6m long, both 600mm wide. These came from the long since demolished labs at my former place of work. Cut carefully to avoid the tongue and groove joints every...

    Guaranteed Acorn!

I have my grandads Acorn #4. It is painted black, I think the older ones pre acquisition by Stanley were ? I also have an Acorn #3 this one was red where it wasn't rust coloured, got for free at a second hand tool stall because I examined it for long enough and nobody else had given it a...

    Cheap small drawknife

Usually the French pattern have a long, shallow grind on one side, and a shorter steeper grind on the other. I would use it with the handles down, so long shallow bevel on the underneath. Has the edge been rounded over a bit perhaps ? My French drawknife is an old Goldenberg from Alsace, very...

    Cheap small drawknife

Are you using it handles up, or down ? It is a French pattern, which I normally like, quite a subtle tool.

    Reclaimed bookcase - finished

Yay, looks smart in place. Your reclaimed wood has harmonised together nicely.

    Reclaimed bookcase - finished

Nice, I like the colour of the reclaimed back boarding. And the principle of using reclaimed wood. I have a garage full of it I must think of a project or too for ! Thanks for treating us to some nice tool pics along the way. The "onion plane" is rather a nice looker. Now, just one thing. I...

    care homes

Sorry for not picking up your meaning. Just an issue to think on for those planning this approach. If you are going blind, physical problems like that, you know what is happening. With Alzheimers, you don't for quite a while, or ever. IME the worst period coping with a relative suffering is...

    care homes

How does that work. One of you is going to die first. If the other can't cope with independent living, what then ? I know, as an able and independent adult, the prospect of a care home looks dreadful. But my father was left living alone, convinced that is what he wanted, spent years...

    Reclaimed bookcase - finished

When I made a bookcase with a boarded back, I T&G them and used one small brass C/S screw per board. My thought was if any book gets pushed back too abruptly, the back won't come off !
