• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Charging Modern Batteries in High Ambient Temperatures.

I do wonder about all those big lithium batteries being installed in lofts paired with solar panels. It gets pretty hot up in our loft.

    Cutting brass door knob

I was going to suggest rotating it periodically as as you saw too. As you have a shoulder to cut to, if you are nervous of wandering into the good part, you could slip on a steel washer (possibly the one that came out of the assembly), saw up against that as it it a bit harder than brass, may...

    Blood pressure

Yes, pulse and O2 saturation can be measured optically. Samsung phones up to the S7 had a sensor on the back, which got dropped presumably to sell more smart watches. Blood pressure, I struggle to believe can be done optically. The wristband BP monitors that work somewhat use a bellows, so...

    Blood pressure

How are these watches that claim to measure blood pressure working ? I have heard of wristband blood pressure monitors that use a bellows arrangement to measure the pressure from the radial artery, presumably they are not doing that ? Pulse and oxygen saturation can be measured optically - as...

    3"x3" Posts

Its common to swap the part panel from one end of the fence to the other so the posts are all in a different place, avoiding the need to haul out the concrete. It is almost as common to discover you were not the first person who has thought of that idea :)

Terminology - Two countries, separated by a common language

As I'm currently sitting in Scotland (Rowardennan, by Loch Lomond, in the sun !) I am reminded of the splendid and colourful contributions the Scots have made that area. Particularly in application to certain Americans.

    UK makers of hand tools

There are two Footprints registered at the same address - Admiral Works in Sheffield. Footprint Tools Ltd was dissolved in 2009, was subsequently resurrected, but is now dormant since 2018 with 0 employees. Footprint Sheffield Ltd, of the same address, is trading since 2007. They seem to have...

    UK makers of hand tools

Crown Hand Tools are still active according to Companies House, though some of their website gives a 404 (and the Youtube video is marked as private).

If there was one hand tool which you would like to see made again.

I think that in many European countries, businesses are not just left to fail as they would be here in the UK, but get rather more state help ?

If there was one hand tool which you would like to see made again.

In truth, my Dad being a steelworker and a hobby woodworker, I grew up surrounded by most of the tools I needed. When I started getting into electronics, I recall going to Hawley's tool shop looking for 0.5 mm drills. Unsurprisingly he had them. I think I still have some somewhere. It was a...

If there was one hand tool which you would like to see made again.

I do think it is important not to forget the downsides of old ways though. When I moved into the town I now live in - 33 years ago now - we had a collection of smaller shops, including a store that fell a little short of a traditional ironmongers, but sold some tools, paint, hardware etc. There...

    Flush Ceiling Ventilation Extractor.

I quite like the vent-axia heat recovery ventilators. They blow air in as well as out, exchanging (some of) the heat from the exhaust air back into the fresh air. Cunningly the exhaust part of the fan is a bit bigger than the intake side, so damp air isn't pushed out into the rest of the house...

    Coronated

"You've got another think coming" is, I believe, the correct (or at least original) form.

    Coronated

I think there is scope for language to evolve. Some neologisms are needed development, some enrich, some may be just a resurgence of an old alternative. But some are ugly and unnecessary; "leveraging" - can't we just use or exploit something anymore ? I've heard something like "de-planeing" on...

    Coronated

"coronate" as an adjective is ok though, as in, bearing a crown or crowning feature.

    Reclaimed sapele

I rescued 2 lab bench tops about 600mm x 28mm x 3m from a former workplace (the lab was demolished). Im my case, they are most definitely iroko. I used some alongside freshly purchased iroko, and it was a perfect match. I need to turn the remainder into a gate sometime soon.

    Letter Tidy

I made our iroko front door, and went for a chromed external letter box flap. Initially I bought a plastic cover with two brushes for the inside, but could not bring myself to fit it, it looked so cheap and awful. I made an alternative from a piece of iroko about 10-15mm thick, with the back...

    Of the moment …..

Medical experiments on prisoners sounds like the first step on the slippery slope to some of the atrocities committed in war time. Very bad for PR, at least.

    'To the finder'

In the course of renovations on our house, built 1938ish, I have found: A pair of old boots in a boxed in area - I think this was a tradition. Decorators marks in pencil under the wallpaper. One had a union jack, and something to the effect of "Germans massing on the coast of France for the...
