• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Axe-ident prone Adrian strikes again

Very good move wearing strong boots ! And using the right axe - a sharp one might have been a different story. One of our greenwood group went to A&E with his leg gaffa taped together after an error with a hewing axe. I was sawing up and splitting some 10-15" diameter ash logs by hand at the...

    Coaster holder #2

Time to make another holder, slightly deeper, and another set of coasters, slightly thinner.

    Mystery trademark

Ahh. Sorry, I had wrongly assumed it was yours. I think it is a long shot, so any extra info might help.

    Mystery trademark

You could help a bit by showing the whole tool, which would help to guess between the likely candidates of French, UK or USA.

    Big square

There's a bit of info on Austin Airframes in here. It could have come from Longbridge, and may have been used in Lancaster production. Maybe. http://www.austinmemories.com/styled/index.html

    Big square

I should look more closely. There isn't a groove in the blade like a combination square, and it isn't very thick. I've not investigated what the large screw actually does. The other end of the stock also has a groove with a stub of what looks to be tool steel inserted, presumably retained by...

    Big square

So, looking for any sign of the interesting taps and dies we once had drew a blank, but this interested me. It's an old square, rule for size. Made by Starrett, but this is the interesting bit: I think this is from Austin (the car maker) during wartime making aircraft components as one of...

    Threading like Grandad

Nice. I think there were some of that pattern around at work once, but I don't know what happened to them. According to the "Dormer tap and die information handbook" edition 1180, date unknown, which I have before me, standard circular split dies can be adjusted by up to 0.008". I recalled...

Well, that day didn't go to plan.

In 2020 when I broke my ankle rather badly, I was forbidden to bear weight on it for 4 weeks. It is surprising what you can do on one leg and/or a tall stool when needs must. I managed to do make my UKW Secret Santa gift; I was minded that Phil who was organising managed his woodwork without...

    Yes another bathroom reno.

Yeah, it can be a real problem doing bathrooms if the loo is out of action for a while ;) You are in Canada, right ? Bathroom plumbing around the world varies so much in what is normal / according to code. Makes it interesting.

Wishing you a good recovery Mike.

    Modern cooking — a rant.

It does seem an expensive piece of kit to not cook a steak with ;)

    Modern cooking — a rant.

Sadly this is believable. Having worked at a research institute in the Agri-Food area, one of my former colleagues was told by someone from a supermarket I won't name but that you might expect better of, that their job was to sell as much air and water as possible.

    Modern cooking — a rant.

This is why I eat out infrequently. The food is much better at home. Perhaps because DW is obsessed with cookery programmes !

    Modern cooking — a rant.

To my taste, the Greeks have it right where roasting lamb is concerned. Long, slow. Until it is close to falling apart. To me the joy of meat is in the caramelised flavours from cooking, it is unappealing raw. Having seen a range of cookery programmes on TV (DW watches all of them, I think)...

    Click-to-fit floor tiles

We have been debating the kitchen floor options, and went for a glued down option. I don't believe, whatever the manufacturers say, that a click system will be really waterproof. Just waterproof enough that any water that seeps under will not easily get back out. This fitted with the experience...

    A question for the electricians

I presume the safety aspects have been thought through, and the device includes its own protection. I imagine though that the creative DIY solar with multi-way extension cables and several panels is inevitably going to happen, probably with a less than perfect outcome. Possibly including...

    A question for the electricians

I'm not an electrician. Though I am an electrical engineer of sorts. Though it may sound dubious, I'm not sure that it differs a lot from what any domestic solar install already does, with the exception of how it is connected. Which does seem a bit counter-intuitive, having a power producing...

Horrible job to do, any tips very welcome.

Just to note that the current rating of cables is greatly different if they are clipped in free air, or completely buried in insulation. Hopefully you only have lighting circuits up there, which with modern lamps will be not greatly loaded.

    Possible New Project - Trophy

If you want the engraving and the spoons on show, there aren't too many options aside from this. Some museum cases use cunning arrangements of mirrors, maybe possible to see the top of the case with the spoons still in it ? (and the right way up to read it !) The case is showing its age a bit...
