• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

A question on insulating the ceiling of the Wonky Donkey

The second figure with construction types A and B looks like the "hot roof/cold roof" options. As you mention an attic above it that may change things a bit, but the overall logic seems to be vapour barrier on the warm side of insulation and ample ventilation on the cold side so that warm moist...

Best way to keep a partially drunk bottle of wine - a novel approach ?

As Adrian has said, decanting half into a clean bottle and keeping that, stopper but not in the fridge works well enough for me. I think the vacuvin does more harm than good, lowering the pressure to increase the loss of volatiles which are the flavour. The bungs are really useful though, they...

    Your favourite listenings......

Cocteau Twins - Shoegaze before it was a thing. I'm more used to earlier albums like Treasure - this one has discernible words ! Love Liz Frazer's appearances in This Mortal Coil too.

Crickey. Blast from the past. Big Bad John. My mum had the Jimmy Dean original on a 78.

    Your favourite listenings......

I am somewhere in the audience in this live video of Norwegian band Kalandra at Lafayette in London. It's quite long (80 mins), but it really is time well spent IMHO !

    Kitchen cabinet feet

You aren't kidding. I have kitchen fitters in at the moment. Our small-ish kitchen has needed us to empty and turn over the largest room in the house for a huge pile of cabinets and appliances. It is hard to believe we will be able to fit all of that and ourselves in the kitchen ! The fitters...

    Beginners Woodworking Category

I was thinking of hobbyists generally, not on WH2 (who are a jolly helpful lot !). I have come across odd crafters (not on here) who - rather than sharing their knowledge - have a slightly protectionist attitude, you can't possibly expect to be competent at this until you've spent 10,000 hours...

    Beginners Woodworking Category

I think there is a point here, I would hope posting in an appropriate area with a descriptive thread title, and if need be with a preamble explaining you are a novice, please be gentle, would get a reasonable response ? I think people who are really keen on their hobby want others to share in...

Praise where praise is due Leicester Royal Infirmary.

I have - like NickM says a maybe a couple of times a year - the visual symptoms of migraine. Usually after a lot of display screen use. Never accompanied by a headache for me though, and usually gone within the hour. Ibuprofen lysine (AKA Neurofen migraine relief) speeds that. I found on the...

Another challenge for the grey cells

Screw into top of radiator, apply bike pump or some such to displace the water with air, close the service valves, radiator off without mess for decorating ?

Wall cupboards in a cold garage

One of the "specials" in my school woodwork class was annual tool maintenance. This involved polishing everything metal and not shiny with oil, rags and possibly fine wet or dry paper until it was, then leaving them with a thin film of oil. As you can never completely control the damp, this is...

Wall cupboards in a cold garage

Are the walls damp from penetration from outside, or condensation from the inside ? If it is penetration from the outside, I'd NOT put insulation on the wall trapping water in the wall, but allow airflow by standing the cupboard off the wall, if you put insulation put it on the cupboard not the...

    Level? In what Universe!

I wonder if the builder who did our kitchen extension had the same spirit level. The floor is 30mm lower at one end than the other. I wondered why the cabinets are standing on blocks at the far end, out of the adjustment range of the legs. Actually I suspect they got their sums wrong on the...

Things have moved on in the last 8 years and KISS

This really irritates me. Especially when it comes from trades and any bad work must be DIYers. Couldn't possibly be a tradesman overstepping their competence. Like kitchen fitters doing gas work & electrics without the required skills let alone certification. Or employees of a company where...

Things have moved on in the last 8 years and KISS

It isn't just Bosch. So many names are owned by a common parent company, and have such a hold on the market that they don't have to give a damn. I have been caught by so many electrical items with obvious design weaknesses. AKG [AKA Harmon international, AKA Samsung] headphones with a flimsy...

Things have moved on in the last 8 years and KISS

I think it all works without. It remains to be seen which way is easier; the ovens may be more convenient to set by the app than by a touch screen at whatever compromise height it ends up at. It may also remain usable if the touch screen fails, which is one of the more common failure modes. And...

Things have moved on in the last 8 years and KISS

I believe NEFF do have a patent for the slide and hide. I'm reading this thread with interest as we(*) have opted to replace our ancient gas hob + fan oven with an induction hob and S&H oven, arriving imminently. I too have my hesitations, particularly about the touch controls. And whether WiFi...

Curved or arched rebate with hand tools

Roy Underhill definitely did something like this in a Woodwright's shop episode, but I can't find it. His had a bead, and was quite a tight radius. IIRC, he began saying he had assumed some clever tool was needed, but the answer is you just carve it. But not without aids - sharpened divider /...

    Solar Kiln, promising progress.

I wouldn't worry too much about a bit of rain. It is moisture withing the cells / vessels of the wood you need gone, a bit of superficial wet will dry off quickly. Warm and moist will make for wet moldy wood IME - tried putting logs in the greenhouse, worse that leaving them outdoors

    Conversion - bathroom to en-suite

It would be so therapeutic to clear all that old disused crap out. Shame the plumber didn't.
