• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    The Accidental Woodworking Club

I can just about remember the things we made in school woodwork class. A totem pole like decoration; basically a bit of softwood approx 35x35x300mm with random housing type cut outs across it or at 45 degrees. Mounted on a square of wood with a dowel as a stand. To learn: sawing to a line...

The benefit of a poor short term memory

If it is important enough to her not to just let it go, you will surely get a reminder shortly anyway.

    Interior doors

Second door done this weekend. This was the harder one. The original door casing had been bricked around, a bit too snugly so the sides were pushed inwards in the middle. This has been irritating me for years - 25 to be precise. Solution was to rip out the door casing, fit a new one, planing...

    Suggestions for excavating this hole

Having done this job for myself just yesterday - 22mm forstner bit, then bevel edged chisel to notch out the corners as above was straightforward. The door was not hung at this point - a vac to get out the waste is handy. I can't see more elaborate tools making it much easier.

Playing about with wooden threads again

Does soaking the beech in linseed oil first help ? I suppose I could find out, as I have a thread box somewhere.

    Auction that may be interest

If I could have them at the estimated prices I'd take a job lot :ROFLMAO:

    Interior doors

Placement of handles and hinges caused me a few moments of thought, as here in the UK the drilling is left to the user. These are 4 panel doors (well, 2 panel + 2 glazed), and the pictures from Deanta show handles placed at the level of the centre rail, which sort of looks meant but (a) is not...

    Interior doors

I bought the Deanta doors from doors2floors.co.uk. Who delivered at 6:40 AM ! In my book, that is way too early.

    Interior doors

So a quick thanks for all comments, and particularly the recommendation for Deanta doors. I ordered a couple, they do look better quality than the previous ones. Square, clean, everything that should be in line is, and they are even nearly flat. They are also correspondingly a bit heavier. I...

    eBay listings and bladed items

My DS has a problem with this. As a postgraduate student, he has income, but it is a "stipend", not a salary. The good news is that does not attract tax. The bad news is that banks and other card providers are not interested in giving him a credit card. Without which buying things like...

Reminding myself of why I prefer hand tools

So yesterday I set out to make a simple thing; one of those trivet things with slots cut from both sides at right angles to each other. This sort of thing: https://www.amazon.co.uk/BELLE-VOUS-Square-Bamboo-Holders/dp/B07WDV7PJP The kind of thing that can only be done really with a router...

    Best Tape Measure

I got one of those "vice-versa" tapes with the marking on both sides. But I still like one with imperial on it; lots of things are still inherently imperial - door sizes for example. Sometimes it is just bloody mindedness to insist on doing something in metric. I also got one of the Festool...

    Coopering

It's all a continuum really, once barrel staves were made with axe, drawknife and hand planes. The step from there to what we see in Scawton looks a lot larger to me than the difference between that and the YT video. Both use sawn wood, power planing etc. I would expect a barrel made by axe and...

    What I have fixed today

Nice idea, but in our house - possibly partly aggravated by very hard water - if you operate the valves frequently, they will then start leaking from the gland. Usually the lime seems to cause pitting in the spindle so tightening does not help. You can replace it - but new plumbing brassware...

Oak dining table build (complete, and inside)

You could tell from page 1 of this thread where you discussed it that that knot was going to be trouble. Character, but in the worst possible place. Looks like however you flip or rotate that board it would have ended up at a vulnerable edge !

Why I don’t do car engine maintenance any more

Mine's a very late 2018 Focus, it has a timing chain, but still a wet belt for the oil pump. I suppose you get a few more seconds before catastrophe.

    WiFi in a ‘faraday cage’?

External antennas ? 10' seems like a pretty short distance though. Power line ethernet ? If you have mains power to the garage, never used them myself.

Any recommendations for a decent soldering iron?

We use Weller or Metcal temperature controlled irons. A high wattage (my current is a WTP90, 90W) pencil type is way better than a cheap 15/25W uncontrolled iron; it hots up quickly and does not lose so much temperature heating the materials to be soldered. Also don't make the mistake of going...

Mixed results with new/old brace and bits I bought

Without seeing the actual boring attempts, or the design you are making just to check - you aren't by any chance trying to bore into the end-grain of the wood ? Very few brace bits work well for that (Gedge pattern or bullnose augurs work best). The flat type in the tool roll lack a lead screw...
