• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I will never buy another Magnet kitchen

I find myself in a similar position at the moment. Though I do find myself again amazed at how much a load of posh chipboard/MDF can cost.

    Interior doors

Unfortunately there is not a nice panelled door hiding behind the hardboard. The thickness is standard, and where I've repaired damage there is no sign of anything within. They are quite old, but could be non original. Quite why they would "modernise" the doors but keep the bakelite hardware I...

    Interior doors

Now that could be helpful, thanks, I'll have a look. One of these doors it to the kitchen, which is an extension and had a sliding door when we moved in. The door was a standard door, and as a consequence the opening is actually 29", not 30" as the door slid over the opening. The plan was to...

    Interior doors

Our house is late 1930's. I know some people are lucky enough to find a house with charming period features, we were not so lucky. The one original fireplace (minus a section of the chimney) was a ghastly brown tiled affair very reminiscent of my granny's house and is now gone. The upstairs...

    Interior doors

    - or how to avoid making them ! I know as a woodworker I could make a couple of glazed interior doors. I've made a couple of doors for our house already, but I suspect my timescales might not suit DW. I'm sure someone commented on an earlier thread about reasonable interior doors being readily...

Making an iron for a moulding plane

As it looks like you've used ground flat stock, was the original iron flat rather than tapered, or did you need to adjust the wedge, or is the difference not enough to worry about ? Most of my molding planes (none as fancy as this) have an iron with a tapered tang, I assumed a cheaper grade...

Notre Dame - craftsmanship at it’s best

TV programmes are largely speaking made by the sort of people who are most interested in people, not tools, buildings or craftmanship. So a predictable outcome. It seems to happen whenever craftsmanship features on TV - the slow TV that kept getting distracted by the craftsman's foorwear, his...

Notre Dame - craftsmanship at it’s best

We were there a couple of weeks ago. A cardinal (?) had inconsideratly died and his funeral was going on, so we had to return in the afternoon. Pretty impressive, and good to see that such things can still be done.

Another sewing machine, progress and help

I inherited this one from my mother in law, who got it from her mother. It is a 1922 model according to the serial number. A bit of light damage; the main turning handle was grated by something, the knob for the thread storage compartment broken, and a thread guide was missing. Sorted now...

    HDL LDL

Maybe this is just semantics, but to me foods have two aspects, ingredients and processes. IMHO, though we talk about "processed foods" and "ultra processed foods", the emphasis is wrong - I'm much less bothered about processes than the actual ingredients. Processing is not the problem in...

    HDL LDL

A quick scan of the ingredients in Waitrose tins of beans showed no added salt. Some have Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) as an antioxidant. Some of the fancy organic chick peas in jars do have salt though. Worth a glance at the ingredients. This fuss about processed and ultra-processed food needs...

"Chewed wires caused blaze". Myth or truth

Oh, and for some strange reason squirrels are really fond of PVC.

"Chewed wires caused blaze". Myth or truth

If your rodent creates a circuit to earth on a circuit protected by an ELCB, it should trip the ELCB fairly uneventfully. If it is on a circuit not protected by an ELCB (eg, an older lighting circuit, quite likely in a loft space), or makes a circuit from Live to Neutral without connecting to...

Fantasy Tool Box - Tuning the Record #043

The 3mm / 1/8 cutter with stepped width looks a good idea. The most annoying feature of the 043 IME is that the clamp does not retain a narrow cutter well - the screw tends to push it sideways when tightening. Or perhaps it is just my particular example. I could not bring myself to drill holes...

How would you knock these out?

Selected beach pebbles and a tile saw. Dishwasher proof, and no short grain to break?

Cutting big coarse threads in wood

I quite fancy a go at a height adjustable stool using a big thread. Can't seem to find a pole lathe with a lead screw though !

    Chair

All good fun. And a nice result. If you make another, I think embracing the natural differences while keeping some stylistic link is the way to go rather than trying for a match - that would be missing the point a bit. In memory of my friend and fellow woodworker Andy who shared this idea with...

    central heating install

I installed our CH, in fact re-plumbed the house - on copper when we moved in many moons ago. Getting someone to just do the gas work on the boiler (which you shouldn't do yourself) was tricky, and I imagine it is no easier now, so you might want to find someone who would do that, and from what...

Affinity Water - meter now activated conundrum

Preferably when your neighbour is out (for clarity, not stealth !), can't you just observe the meter with nothing going on in your house, compared to a tap or two fully open ? If it makes no difference, the meter isn't metering your supply. Edited to add: that's a different meter to mine, but...
