• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Raw vs boiled linseed oil

I think food grade linseed oil is usually sold as flax seed oil, some of the green wood workers prefer it for wood in food contact. Raw linseed comes in gallons from equine suppliers; don't know why, I didn't know you had to do oil changes on your horse. But it is a cheap enough source if you...

    Raw vs boiled linseed oil

Some woods go a really lurid yellow with linseed. I would not expect it to stop splitting. Green woodworkers have tried all sorts of things, including boiling bowls in oil, can't say I've seen many success stories. How you cut the board out of the tree is the key bit.

    The Anarchists Stool?

I saw a good friend of mine using a travisher he bought from James Mursell at the Windsor Workshop He challenged me to make my own, and as a start drew round the parts on a sheet of paper. That sheet of paper served as my plan, you can see it almost went up during the making of the cutting...

    Spindle gouges

Yes. As a sometime pole lathe turner, as well as gouges and the skew, we use a large flat chisel too. If you use the flat chisel as a skew with no skew angle (skew the whole tool) and think of a gouge as a skew with the corners curved up out of harms way, you will do alright.

    Chair Steps Project

Looking nice. What I will have to wait for, is how secure this design of chair steps feel in use ... I wonder if the top step with the dovetails would really be used, if not a version without it could be simplification (I've been thinking about having a go at one of these chairs since Andy T...

    Complete finishing balls up

Things that might help get the gunk off. Something alkaline, like sodium hydroxide aka caustic soda. With appropriate care. It will react with the oil to make soap which washes off. It will also strip paint if a stiff enough solution is used. Natural turpentine to dissolve stickiness, and...

    Back bevel

You mentioned using a back bevel to avoid corrosion. Thought it could be quite deep hence a big-ish bevel. That's what I was doing with the Acorn #3, some pitting in the back of the iron where the cap iron was sitting and presumably damp wicked in. Eventually just ground away about 1/4".

    Back bevel

Just a word of caution - some plane irons are laminated. On a cheap Acorn #3 I played with, the hard layer is not terribly thick. Don't get too carried away with your back bevel or you might find it doesn't hold an edge so we'll.

    How's your Latin?

Preston style adjustable bit handle WIP

Looks a bit like a cheese sampling tool, but I'm guessing it isn't because I can't think of a reason for the feature on the handle, and I guess it would be stainless. Hmm.

Preston style adjustable bit handle WIP

Well, I enjoyed watching that. Nice result, and a good recovery from the early mistake. It looks a similar size to the handles on those Monument side branch opener tools for lead plumbing, which often appear for sale mistakenly as a woodwork tool. But they all seem to have fitted handles.

    Chair Steps Project

You can fit an extra side handle to some, so you can hold onto that with your other hand while you turn with your third arm  Sometimes the cordless drill is tempting.

    Chair Steps Project

I assumed you were drawing from the Lisbon chair in your photo, which has rails there. It also avoids the little stubs of rail that have caused problems with their dowel joints. I think you do right to M&T them instead.

Never assume - stupidity strikes again to accident prone A

Interestingly, the conclusions from this article are quite the reverse of everything I've been told elsewhere - which is that DC is more capable of producing a lock-on situation, whereas AC - especially high frequency AC - is beyond the bandwidth of muscles to respond to. One related anecdote...

I want to reach out …

Things that trigger me ... USA "I could care less" when they mean "I couldn't care less", literally the opposite of what is meant ;-) But the most horrific abuse in danger of becoming common usage - "I could of" (or "I should of") where "I could've" / "I could have" it meant. Shudder. And how...

Never assume - stupidity strikes again to accident prone A

My school friend and I - must have been 14 at the time - were grafting together 2 broken TVs in order to watch the launch of the first space shuttle. One had a duff tube, the other had a different fault, but they were the same sized tube. Swapped the CRT over, turned it on, not working. Forgot...

    Water management - rain bursts

I have the problem that no soakaway works when the ground is saturated, no matter how big. In really wet times, mine fills up, backs up, then just adds to the pond that was the top half of the lawn.
