• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Retrieved from Dad's

Tidying up at my old Dad's last weekend. He is still with us, but no longer able to live independently. Some things worth retrieving His Stanley no5 - not that I really need another - a vernier, and some stuff for drawing circular things. His work involved making all sorts of 3D objects...

    More of those lab benches.

We were talking about chemistry lab bench tops the other day. At the weekend I cut up a couple of them, one 1.8m and this one, 2.6m long, both 600mm wide. These came from the long since demolished labs at my former place of work. Cut carefully to avoid the tongue and groove joints every...

    Big square

So, looking for any sign of the interesting taps and dies we once had drew a blank, but this interested me. It's an old square, rule for size. Made by Starrett, but this is the interesting bit: I think this is from Austin (the car maker) during wartime making aircraft components as one of...

Reminding myself of why I prefer hand tools

So yesterday I set out to make a simple thing; one of those trivet things with slots cut from both sides at right angles to each other. This sort of thing: https://www.amazon.co.uk/BELLE-VOUS-Square-Bamboo-Holders/dp/B07WDV7PJP The kind of thing that can only be done really with a router...

    Interior doors

    - or how to avoid making them ! I know as a woodworker I could make a couple of glazed interior doors. I've made a couple of doors for our house already, but I suspect my timescales might not suit DW. I'm sure someone commented on an earlier thread about reasonable interior doors being readily...

Paint for handrails / high traffic surfaces

I'm still struggling to find a paint suitable for a stair handrail. The most successful so far has been traditional, oil based gloss. The drawbacks being that it yellows (I'm not greatly troubled by this) but more importantly the fumes indoors, especially at this time of year. I used some...

If you think the 1950's lathe was a bit basic ....

... I don't normally inconvenience electrons for wood turning, but there's this  : Tool rest a bit too crude, could only do a scraping cut. Needed some improvements, but good enough repair this: According to the label, "Uhrenfabrik Teutonia", Philip Haas und Sohne, of St. Georgen...

    Old saw

From Naxos, Greece. Early Cycladic I/II, 3200-2300 BC. National museum, Athens. But what are the other tools (?).

    Loggerheads

Anyone watching this on BBC Scotland / iplayer ? Odd to have green woodworking judged by someone who says they have never seen a shavehorse before. With competitors who seem not to be green woodworkers. And to praise tight fitting dovetails in green wood, with fhe grain orientation such that it...

    DeWalt disappointment

I see DeWalt are now fully harmonised with traditional Black and Decker quality and service. One of my £60+ DeWalt battery packs failed suddenly after 18 months, which seems a bit short to me, especially as it gets very light use. I thought I'd have a moan to them. Sorry, excluded from the 3...

    Picture frame

I seem to post too much general chat and not enough woodwork. Probably reflects on life at the moment ! Anyway, a tiny bit to redress the balance. A frame, for my son. Reclaimed wood from old furniture. Just glued up, checking the fit of the backing board and the glass. I wanted a hint of...

    Sheffield steelworkers

I dunno whether this interests anyone other than me, but on the off chance... Workers at the foundry of Newton Chambers engineering, Chapeltown, Sheffield. I'm guessing not far from the time of this video: https://www.yfanefa.com/record/4678 The man sitting at the centre front ... is my...

    Making holes without electrons

So, the one power tool I find myself struggling to wean myself off is the cordless drill. Even though I curse the fact that it is never charged when I need to use it, it is pretty convenient. For big holes, the brace and bit, or Scotch eye augers are great and strangely fun to use. For...

    Toothing plane built

You might remember that in ->an earlier thread<- I mentioned a toothing plane iron I found in an oddments box at a Tools for Self Reliance stall. Thanks to all who provided help on what the plane should look like, AndyT in particular. I finally got off my a**e this weekend and made a start...

Making a mess in the garden, and some chair parts

It seems like ages since I did some turning. Well actually it is ... In other circumstances this weekend should have been the Bodgers' Ball, and I would have been camping in a field somewhere making shavings. But for the second year it is cancelled, so I thought I do something at home - and...

    Woodie with some missing parts

Well, I was going to share a glue-up with you, but the instructions on both bottles of glue say it is far too cold in my little workshop, so it stays as a pile of bits. So, I had a look around for something interesting to fiddle with instead, and found this plane with a few missing parts OK...

    Tonneliers

I have in enjoyed watching videos of coopers from across the pond on the excellent folkstreams.net. If, like me, you find yourself at a loose end, the French version : https://m.ina.fr/video/VDD10045487/fabr ... video.html They don't hang around do they. Some confident axe work there, and...

    Pole lathe

At least one person asked about the pole lathe in the introdictions thread. Well, that's good enough excuse for me ! I hope you weren't expecting the hand hewn from a tree thing of great beauty sort ! It was made in an enthusiastic hurry to get turning, so with plenty of compromises and...

    Hello from Bedfordshire

Hello, and thanks for letting me in as yet another asylum seeker ;) I see quite a few names I know already, including some I haven't seen in a while. The nickname "Sheffield Tony" I picked up at university to distinguish me from "Italian Tony" ! Although I'm living in Bedfordshire now, I was...
