• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Blue handled Stanley bevel edged chisels.

Pretty sure the saws from Footprint and Crown are Thomas Flinn. Nobody else makes them in Sheffield. As I understand it - I think a bloke from Crown told me - their chisels, Hamlet ones and Henry Taylor all source the forged parts and handles from the same makers. Dunno about Sorby.

    Backlash the reduction off

I've never really understood the fuss about "backlash". Adjusting the iron to protrude further, no issue. Retracting the iron, just spin the adjuster back the other way until contact is made. It's not like tap, tap tap - oops a bit over, tap tap - still not right ... and we somehow put up with...

Why is there a notch in the thumbscrew on a marking gauge?

By wasting bit of boxwood ? The screw isn't all that long, so leaving a stub where the centre was and parting it off might give you 10% more wastage.

    Osmo oil

Personally I rate Osmo - at least it doesn't degenerate into a tacky mess over time if you handle it like the water based rubbish. I use Osmo pretty slowly, but haven't yet had to throw any out through it being solid or too goopey - it does seem get thicker and yellower eventually though. I...

    Has anybody been left behind?

Erm - I think I used to log in with my screen name, now only my e-mail address can be used. But I'm sure most can figure it out.

Paint for handrails / high traffic surfaces

I'm still struggling to find a paint suitable for a stair handrail. The most successful so far has been traditional, oil based gloss. The drawbacks being that it yellows (I'm not greatly troubled by this) but more importantly the fumes indoors, especially at this time of year. I used some...

If you think the 1950's lathe was a bit basic ....

... I don't normally inconvenience electrons for wood turning, but there's this  : Tool rest a bit too crude, could only do a scraping cut. Needed some improvements, but good enough repair this: According to the label, "Uhrenfabrik Teutonia", Philip Haas und Sohne, of St. Georgen...

    Old saw

From Naxos, Greece. Early Cycladic I/II, 3200-2300 BC. National museum, Athens. But what are the other tools (?).

    Loggerheads

Anyone watching this on BBC Scotland / iplayer ? Odd to have green woodworking judged by someone who says they have never seen a shavehorse before. With competitors who seem not to be green woodworkers. And to praise tight fitting dovetails in green wood, with fhe grain orientation such that it...

    Turned chair

Chair from Leeds Castle, Kent. Must surely be repro or just a guess ?

    DeWalt disappointment

I see DeWalt are now fully harmonised with traditional Black and Decker quality and service. One of my £60+ DeWalt battery packs failed suddenly after 18 months, which seems a bit short to me, especially as it gets very light use. I thought I'd have a moan to them. Sorry, excluded from the 3...

    Picture frame

Well, it is glued up now, and I'm not cutting another to take a photo ! But maybe this helps. Both halves the same, as I described it earlier, effectively a lap joint with mitred shoulders. So the shape isn't complicated at all, it is just getting the little mitred shoulders to meet up...

    Picture frame

I seem to post too much general chat and not enough woodwork. Probably reflects on life at the moment ! Anyway, a tiny bit to redress the balance. A frame, for my son. Reclaimed wood from old furniture. Just glued up, checking the fit of the backing board and the glass. I wanted a hint of...

    Sheffield steelworkers

I dunno whether this interests anyone other than me, but on the off chance... Workers at the foundry of Newton Chambers engineering, Chapeltown, Sheffield. I'm guessing not far from the time of this video: https://www.yfanefa.com/record/4678 The man sitting at the centre front ... is my...

    Making holes without electrons

So, the one power tool I find myself struggling to wean myself off is the cordless drill. Even though I curse the fact that it is never charged when I need to use it, it is pretty convenient. For big holes, the brace and bit, or Scotch eye augers are great and strangely fun to use. For...

    Ash bed WIP - Finished!

Linseed. You should see the colour of linseed on boxwood. A friend carved a boxwood spoon and used linseed on it, it went really bright yellow. My experience - ash and walnut chair, freshly finished with 3 coats Rustins Danish, then homemade wax (beeswax, turpentine and linseed) Feb 2017...

    Toothing plane built

Aha. I deliberately didn't mention it, I wondered if anyone would pick up on that. As I mentioned, the sole was just a work around for not having a thicker block of beech, but I liked the look of those continental planes with the corrugated join, and wondered if if would look interesting...

    Toothing plane built

Pretty much done. Still soaking up linseed oil at the moment. Opportunity to play with my Chalco stamp. That little dark feature is a very small buried knot which wasn't apparent until I trimmed the ends to length, i.e., a bit too late. I don't suppose it will cause any problems, but it...

    Toothing plane built

You might remember that in ->an earlier thread<- I mentioned a toothing plane iron I found in an oddments box at a Tools for Self Reliance stall. Thanks to all who provided help on what the plane should look like, AndyT in particular. I finally got off my a**e this weekend and made a start...

Making a mess in the garden, and some chair parts

It seems like ages since I did some turning. Well actually it is ... In other circumstances this weekend should have been the Bodgers' Ball, and I would have been camping in a field somewhere making shavings. But for the second year it is cancelled, so I thought I do something at home - and...
