• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Choice of Wood

Evening All, I have two questions about types of wood. Firstly, a friend has a garden table with a metal frame and wooden top and the latter is beginning to rot. What wood would you recommend as a long term fix? I assume that oak is an obvious choice but there must be others. Assuming I settle...

    Resiny Pine

I've been thinking about this and thought that a photo might be illustrative: What you can see there is bits of the lubricating candle wax in the grooves. Nothing seems to stick to the strips of sole in contact with the wood. My assumption is that resin from the wood follows suit and so...

    A question about Google

I have recently had an update to the operating software of this laptop (Apple Airpad). Since then my Google is stuck in Google Images (which I had never seen before) and I want to get back to normal Google. I can't find anything which enables me to do that? Any suggestions?

    Resiny Pine

I recently bought for the first time some Ponderosa Pine, basically to see what it is like. It's moderately knotty but readily recognisable as a type of pine. After a few weeks of letting it settle, I have planed a couple of pieces and there was nothing remarkable about that. Today I had a go...

    Ponderosa Pine

Hello All, I was looking at some Ponderosa Pine today as I intend to build a large-ish (6'x6') bookcase. It looks like it has gone through a P/T and so the only job will be to plane to thickness (if no movement occurs during drying). There are knots but they clearly cut cleanly and the bloke in...

    Blue Spruce Coping Saw

I'm sure we've all heard of Blue Spruce tools: beautiful but hugely expensive chisels, for instance. I'd never buy one of those because they're just too pretty to use. I have just received the Classic Hand Tools news letter and it describes this new coping saw from Blue Spruce...

    got wood, but what?

This is definitely elm (both main boards and ends) and it's not a million miles away from what you have there but it's hard to say for sure that it's the same wood:

    Folding Rules

Having just noted some upper end second hand prices e.g. https://www.jimbodetools.com/collection ... sior-96419 I wonder if any enterprising small manufacturer will take up the making of four fold rules again. I've got half a dozen of them in various sizes and they are extremely useful tools...

    Teutonic Tax Madness

I imagine that one of the few things which unites human beings around the world is the nightmare of dealing with their tax offices. German govt loves bureaucracy and regulation so I suspect that they compete in the same league as HMRC. Last year I got a letter from them, opened it and saw the...

Maximum length of wood on the bench?

My bench is 6' long. I want to build a tallish bookcase which in an ideal world would probably be about 7' tall. I've never planed a piece of wood which is longer than my bench. Obviously my concern is achieving flatness along the full length of a board. Could anybody who has had experience of...

    Lenghts of stored wood.

This is just a general query. I'm about to buy some wood and luckily I have no need to store or dry out full sized planks. The largest size I will need for my next project (a couple of biggish bookcases) is 6 foot and as I intend to make them out of pine, the moisture content will or should...

    A New Jigsaw

No, not that kind of jigsaw. Yesterday, I bought on a whim and for the first time in my life a jigsaw puzzle. I had a few when I was a kid but they were all Christmas or birthday presents. The one I got is a 1,000 piece thing of a Heironymous Bosch painting (the only artist of whom I have ever...

    How much??!!!? (No 4)

This one takes the biscuit so far: https://www.jimbodetools.com/collection ... -of-apr-10 It's a carved piece of wood!! Not even a particularly attractive carved piece of wood.

    How much??!!!? (No 3)

Have a look at this: https://www.jimbodetools.com/collection ... s-of-mar-7 It's got to be cheaper to commission one bloke to chop down the tree for the wood and another bloke to build the thing. It does look very nice though.

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

Before Christmas I started work on a bedside table, made a bit of progress then the festive season itself came and I ended up doing an hour here and an hour there. The loss of continuity was not good: I got out of my rhythm a couple of times and did daft things like mitring a tenon on the wrong...

New adjusting knobs for Bailey style planes.

New often means "gimmicky" but this one looks interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8PcEm1_Cw0 Any thoughts?

    Finishing a cherry table top.

A friend of mine who knows nothing about woodwork is quite happy to get a sander and sand down the cherry top of her kitchen table. She sought my advice about the finish, saying, "I want a glossy deep sheen but I don’t want varnish". My original thought was a couple of coats of Danish Oil...

    Battery-less Festool drill?

I'm not too clued up on power tools, hence this question. I'm thinking of getting a Festool drill (I have one of their sanders and associated vacuum cleaner and am pleased with it when I need it, although it doesn't get too much use). I would like a drill that can do relatively slow revs for...

Ideal size of smoothing plane and ideal set of planes?

I'm just asking this out of interest to see what other folk think. In general terms I don't have too much use for a purpose built smoothing plane, because I tend to go from sharply cambered Millers Falls No 5 (effectively a scrub plane) to a Record 5 1/2 for general flattening to a Veritas LAJ...

Anybody else still got an iPod?

I got an iPod about three years ago because I don't like the idea of using my phone for music. I tend to the philosophy of one tool for one job, the exception perhaps being multi-planes. Anyway, I hadn't used the thing for a while when I dug it out the other day, charged it up, did a software...
