• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    new houses

They have been building for the last 25years here. That used to be my view out of my window until they started a big housing scheme. Back then a new house was about £80k and a nice condition ex council was £50k. You can still get a nice ex council for £120k but a new build is £240k. The town has...

    new houses

I got a leaflet through the door recently saying there are plans to build 350 houses near me. On prime farm land. Our town is pretty much dead compared to its industrial past, and is only a housing development creating a commuter town. The builders were very keen to point out that its outside...

    thieving gits

Yes if they look out of normal from your usual activity, one had gone through but the other three were pending because the bank had frozen the card already. Thats pretty good I think. Dont know Bob, but I highly suspect wifes phone activity. I'm not blameless though I did buy something from...

Sat on couch with mrs and phone gets a few text pings off the trot. Its off the bank saying theres unusual activity on my card. I goes on the banking app to find 4 payments to bet365 totaling £270. Freeze card quickly. I was just warning mrs that she shouldnt click on any links via facebook...

    Apprenticeships

Not sure if its true but some guy let it slip during an interview that the reason new houses are not getting built quicker is because it would affect the profit margins. I wonder if post war housing was built by council workers or private builders. When I was a kid there was still a biggish...

    Apprenticeships

One thing I dont get is why dont councils build social housing again, They did it in the 50's, my house is a prime example, It has needed very little work in 75 years except the normal updating of electrics. I reckon it might need a roof in the next 10years. Surely it would be cost effective for...

Where/How best to sell HiFi separates?

A friend does house clearances and moves stuff for auction houses. I mentioned I was after a separates, so he turns up one day with some mid level bits still in boxes. Cambridge audio, denon and technics. Two of each and a set of B&W speakers. They were getting skipped because of no sale. I...

Farm Boy Hit and Miss engine

Lovely work, I picked up a little stuart No8 steam engine in with a box of loco bits and pieces. I should probably leave it till my machining abilities are less crude.

Question for you machinist folks about auxiliary sliding extrusion on tablesaw

Hi Tom, I dont get it. What is the purpose of the low fence? is it supposed to reduce kickback? All that is needed to stop kickback is a fence alligned correctly. The fence plate should not be parallel to the blade but should tow out very slightly. I'm not a fan of american style long fences...

    Battery 'hand' truck ?

It all depends on what terrain you want to cross. Pallet couriers are moving to electric pump trucks which easily lift and move over a tonne. They will move on compacted gravel. Then theirs 4 wheel drive mini dumpers used for loading skips with rubble. You walk behind them. They look handy but...

    central heating install

I checked for any grants but the only one available is eco4, which is based on the epc on the house. It doesnt matter if the boiler works or not. If the original back boiler was still in then there might of been funding.

    central heating install

Gas, place is 3 bed semi, 8 rads, existing pipes are microbore. Radiators have never been flushed in 20years and no maintenance. A couple have rusted out so can assume the system is very sludged up.

    central heating install

We gave daughter grannys old place. I knew the heating was on its last legs but was hoping to get a bit more time out of it. The rads and pipes are 40 years old but it had a combi bodged on about 12years ago. It needs a total system. Daughter has no money so I'm paying. I'm seriously considering...

Hammer C3 31 from rotary converter issue

I vaguely remember Bob saying once that machine starters and breaks dont like the artificial leg generated by a converter. Maybe try swapping more wires around.

To stop it evaporating so quickly I spray it on scotchbrite rather than the item I'm cleaning.

    Apple Sequoia ‘trashgrade’

Usually new printers will come with smaller or partially filled ink cartridges. My cannon needed new cartridge but I kept on forgetting, by the time I got one and fitted it the printer no longer printed, just went through the motions. I think the print head must of dried out. £30 wasted

Tree swallows tending their nest boxes.

They used to travel to a street near me to make nests, have done since I was a kid. Apparently they dont come anymore. People would put up plastic bags to deter them, they didnt like the noise of chicks and droppings. Can you imagine flying from africa and some horrible person has ruined your...
