• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

There is still a chance I'll flute the legs. It kind of depends on how much time I have left after making the top.

Thanks. I've tweaked the design a bit here and there. I've given up on making the egg and dart moulding. My carving skills aren't up to it and it would take too long. I'm keeping the simpler ovolo moulding, though. Here is what it will look like now:

The tops of the legs get these stub tenons, which will insert into mortices in the top frame. They will fix the top in position and also reinforce the corner M&T joinery.

Most of the base joinery is rough cut. I'm not sure I'll get this done by Easter, which is my deadline, unless I pick up the pace.

After 53 years I have to take my test again!

    Dang it. Missed one.

    Almost usable, now.

It was $200, which, although they didn't specify, I'm guessing is almost all for labor/labour and facility costs. I was told that for something small like this they just start with a piece of scrap stone from the yard which at this point costs them nothing. I believe they also sell those scrap...

I haven't weighed it directly but this volume of medium density limestone is estimated to weigh about 52 pounds/23.5 kg.

I picked up the limestone this morning. I think they did a nice job. While I was waiting I wandered around the stone yard. I love visiting places like this.

I have found this approach to work well, too. My view is that the General Woodworking subforum is a good place for questions from beginners.

    Glasses - what's your view?

I just a bought new glasses two weeks ago from a chain store (Lenscrafters. They are everywhere over here.) My last pair was I think 5 years ago and they were badly scratched and had mismatched earpieces since the dog chewed off one of the originals. $150 for the new frames I chose and $300 for...

I don't know whether any is making them now. Several Japanese tools sites list them as "out of stock" or unavailable. I see them from time to time as used items on online auction sites. https://daiku-dougu.jp/00-oiirenomi.html

Well, there are other ways to skin that cat but one nice thing about the mitre jack is that it raises the work to a more comfortable level than, say, bending over a bench vise.

Several days of tedium cleaning up the mouldings by paring and sanding. Lots of endgrain, then easing edges. My mitre jack came in handy for this, along with the kote nomi and a sandpaper stick.

Retirement , what is the end game.

From a story in the New York Times today: ...Last year, as tourism grew worldwide, the United States was the only major destination to see a decline in foreign visitors, recording a 6 percent drop, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council, an industry group. January saw a continued...

I can say that after a couple of days they haven't moved at all. The inside portions of the pattern can/do flex a bit with gentle side pressure. A friend has cautioned me that they may skate around when clamped and lubricated by the wet glue. To stop that he suggested a bit of double sided tape...

Front and back mouldings and two side mouldings. The side moulding still need to be squared up. They also have a unit width 3 mm less than the front and back mouldings to fit their space evenly so I had to make a separate template. On one attempt I didn't have the blank held down firmly...

You've passed the "which one's not like the others" test, Ian! Fixed it. Ends left long for final fitting.
