• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Well, that day didn't go to plan.

That’s not good. I ruptured mine about 15 yrs ago and can still remember how painful it was. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

    Dogs’ understanding of time

I think they recognise time in a different way to humans and it’s possibly more related to routine or picking up on things that are precursors (that we may not notice) to something we know happens at a particularr time.

Is there such a thing as 'cheap' paring chisels!

You may find a router plane is more useful for that job. Chop the bulk of the waste out with your bench chisels and then do the rest with the router plane.

    Co-op Rip Off Insurers

Since 2022 the practice of charging more for a renewal than is being charged to a new customer has been banned by the FCA. (It’s the same for home insurance). Motor insurance is largely commoditised. The pricing models are based on statistical experience. The claims handling model is also...

    A question for the electricians

There is more detail here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czjw7klkjm2o?app-referrer=deep-link From wider reading it seems they are already in use and becoming popular in France and Germany so I’d wager there is something to them. It still seems odd to me that, on the face of it, they...

    A question for the electricians

I know there are a few members who are knowledgeable in electrical matters. I’d welcome their thoughts on the reports that budget solar panels will shortly be available from Aldi and Amazon. From what I have read (on Sky News) these are simply taken out if the box and plugged into a normal...

You are correct Ian - pictured here ... https://www.robertthompsons.co.uk/journal/from-tree-to-table-the-making-of-a-mouseman I do wonder how long it takes an apprentice to achieve the required standard of uniformity when preparing a table top.

    Chisels

I stick to the advice given by Chris Tribe who was both a maker and tutor which is that the best regime is the one that works for you chosen from all the different sharpening mediums available. Pick one and get on with it. I have over time moved to using diamond plates followed by stropping on...

You aren’t that far away from the Old Tool Store which is run by Ray Iles who is part of the Ashley Iles family. it may be worth giving him a call and arranging to visit to take a look at what he has if you are looking at secondhand. It’s generally become more complex and expensive buying on...

Horrible job to do, any tips very welcome.

Can you open or temporarily remove that window Ian? If so, and depending on access below, you could get one of those rubbish chutes that directs straight into a skip to save bagging up or taking it through the house?

    Party Wall

We were served notice on a rental property. The tenant sat on the letter and dropped it into the agent a month later. IIRC as we had not responded it was automatically deemed that a dispute had arisen so the problem sat with the neighbour who was in the process of invoking the dispute...
