• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Uses 'electrickery' so... Cross line laser unit

A lesson I learned afterwards. Even though I'd shown him how he should use it by cutting some of his boards for him it's belatedly become obvious he'd not done as I'd demonstrated.

@Mike sad to read about your experience of loaning your saw out. But well done to your friend for doing the right thing with replacement 👍

Done this myself many times in the past.

@Mike - I don't fully trust in my tools... they can go wrong. I've had doubts about the bubble levels I've got (four of them, different sizes on length) and used them when fitting the bedroom wardrobes and two kitchens (been here 40 yrs come Dec 2026). After buying this cheapo laser I checked...

Well... I'm definitely somewhat disappointed in the way this post, to bring something to the members attention, has initially been received.  I'll certainly be thinking twice before making any such future posts that's for sure. LOTS of choice out there for those that want to, or decide to, do...

Uses 'electrickery' so... Cross line laser unit

I've a number of 'decent levels' which I've used when needed to set things level and vertical... and to check afterwards. One in particular I've had (and checked regularly) for over 45 years back when I renovated an old farmhouse on the West Yorkshire moors. Now I'm close to 75 it appeals to...

EDIT, 11TH MARCH 2026: CORRECT PRICE IN STORES IS £24.99. I've noidea as to why it was £19.99 in my store. NOTHING showed it had been reduced or was being offered at a £5 reduction. Wasn't sure which suited this best but, as this section mentions 'electrickery' and this uses batteries... 😎...

In administration: Miles Tool & Machinery, Yeovil.

Miles Tool & Machinery entered administration February 23 due to cashflow issues I've not seen any mention of this on the forum but more bad news for lost jobs etc. Miles Tool & Machinery Centre Limited, a long-established family-run business based in Yeovil, Somerset, entered administration...

Ian’s new workshop. The Wonky Donkey. Starting to fit the lintels.

Only saying what I was told around 58~60 years ago... and advised to use lost head nails. I wasn't working in any new build housing back then. Worked fine for me. I've never found any floorboards fixed down with screws - even when I renovated an old farmhouse on the West Yorkshire moors and had...

Ian’s new workshop. The Wonky Donkey. Starting to fit the lintels.

Many, many years ago I was going to screw down some plywood as a floor. I was told "not to be so daft" and nail it. When I asked why I was told that "screws will loosen due to the vibrations due to the amount of footfall" ... I don't know for definite if that is true as I duly nailed the boards...

    Scam alert

It's good to see 'da management' are vigilant at keeping these PITA away most of the time before we become aware of them. I only became aware of this one this morning via the DD post I got from 'the other place'. I came along here to see if there was a mention of it to find this post by...

    Workshop on a slope

Could you make it 6 x 5m if your garden was wide enough? Or 5 x 6m to get approximately ½m instead of the 1m at the low point?

Box (Buxus) moth - trap now

Not yet sadly. I've just cut back the branches and put the debris into a garden trug to then tip into the garden waste at the recycling centre. I've a goldfish pond will sometimes drop the grubs/'pillers into the pond for the fish but I'm not certain the fish benefit from such. Also if not eaten...

Box (Buxus) moth - trap now

Not had box moth issues but have had sawfly... one day the tree/shrub has leaves the next almost nothing and the little *blanks* freeze so they hope to fool you to think they are the leaves... 🤨 The other bug I've had problems with is Vine Weevil, mainly the grubs. Usually decimate the roots of...

    Destructive critter?

Plant it in the ground Steve... it's the only way if you want a large tree *quickly* as being in a pot restricts the growth. If I want to get any of my 'Bonsai' to be bigger in the trunk etc., then they go in the ground... remove the tap root though otherwise there'd be problems when I want to...

Thanks Alasdair for the explanation of the forum software used. If the forum admin do decide to look further on this as something for the future I do feel it would be something to benefit from and increase members participation. The DD I receive is just one email with a list of the 'subjects'...

I've got everything ticked for this forum... including the summary. From what I've seen the two woodworking forums are pretty much identical for layout... (sometimes I've got mixed up as to which I'm on 😉) - except WH2 doesn't have the Daily digest visible to select. If I want to see (feel the...

I think @duke has a good suggestion putting such forward for consideration and it could be titled "Is this a silly question? " - then we can all post to it and not just *beginners*. When I first joined this forum I was surprised to not find an option to select to receive a "Daily Digest" of new...
