• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Reclaimed sapele

Thats fantastic Lons. For me it took almost 10 years before she even allowed any cupboards to be put up (very strange I tell ya). Now when I want to upgrade my bookshelf, the standard response is that 'you never read your books anyway, take em to the charity shop'. Gotta laugh, or I'd cry. I'm...

    Reclaimed sapele

She's part of my problem Duke. Always looking for a new project. Starts it then pestering me until I concede to doing it. Then it's my job and I'm always trying to figure out ways of doing woodwork, making my shed base or riding the bike. I have to cycle 40 miles to work just to get a ride in 😄

    Redundant Cherry kitchen cabinet doors

That looks beautiful that Malc. Modern day art. I can't tell where the cupping was/is.

Lol. I'm on nightshift Duke. I really ought to delete it but some will make sense to Lons 😄. I'm fresh but dyslexia teacher used to tell us, 'tell em what you wanna tell em, tell em, tell em what you told them'. Hence, I obviously was trying to tell too many stories at once 🤪

Deleted... Suffice to say that I'm making a shoe shelf in protest at my wife being a instigator of slave-labour. Oh, and I threw away lots of lots of (cheap, plastic) trophies of the kids, but still haven't owned up. Saved us at least 0.5m² of space (not sure what that is in US money, sorry 😆...

I think they call it, 'thats mahasive'.. lol. I am so glad I don't have that much space Lons or the wife would be keeping the previous kitchen sink (figure of speech... toilet might be more accurate as thats what we had removed) as a 'just in case'. You should share the sapele 😁

Disston D8 28 inch Rip Saw - RIP

Thanks Pete. Yes, have just ordered a newer Eclipse 77 (the red versions bordering on a Spear and Jackson look) off ebay. Almost got a Japanese Somax but the 'sharps rule' got me! Will get back on it and not lose too much hope 😃

Disston D8 28 inch Rip Saw - RIP

Well, as they say that there is a blessing and goodness for us in everything. If I'd not messed up my Disston I would never ever have found this vid by Lie Nielsen.

Disston D8 28 inch Rip Saw - RIP

Yes, thanks @Mike . Of course, convex was the word I meant (dyslexia-organisational difficulties in my brain and everything else... you should see my work areas and flow!!). Indeed, thats what I will be doing at midnight when my pay comes in, ordering a new saw-set tool. Hopefully I can save it...

Disston D8 28 inch Rip Saw - RIP

Just to confirm what an utter idiot I am. It even says it in the blurb 'Taper ground blade – To reduce any friction and binding Curved tooth line on the blade'. https://disstontools.com/product/disston-d-8-26-rip-cut-hand-saw-4-5-tpi/

Disston D8 28 inch Rip Saw - RIP

In fact, let me qualify that. It cuts almost as bad as that Bahco I thought I was smart in buying after reading various 'rip' reviews. Well ok. Thats not my Disston and I have no plans on screwing over my Marples (Ridgeway!).

Disston D8 28 inch Rip Saw - RIP

So, my best ever saw. You know, the one I found and settled on after about another couple of £100s spent seeking out the best saw to rip my sycamore tree. The one that would bring a smile to the face when ripping through massive chunks of lumber. Well, it had a bit of a concave (belly as Paul...

Spot for a cabin, delayed for 5 years, maybe this year.

Ta Duke. It just threw me off that I couldn't see your chimney. I obviously never looked properly.

Spot for a cabin, delayed for 5 years, maybe this year.

Really enjoyed reading this, this morning Duke (Scott?). Probably we'll above my skill level but I'll be building a shed (not a log cabin) at the bottom end of our property (not in acres, but back garden measured in metres 😁). Will certainly be taking inspiration from this and keeping an eye...

Holdfast holes - is there really much science behind palcement?

Thanks Mike. I'll go and have a look at bench dog hole positioning. Its a 6 inch joist and so far my first hole I marked out at 4 inch from the front (length ways of the joist-bench) and 2 inch from the sides. I think a few at 2 inch in from the sides and 2 inch all round will work ok. I'll...

Holdfast holes - is there really much science behind palcement?

Thats an interesting/insightful drawing and very much thanks for sharing it @Cabinetman My bench is 70mm (sorry, is that about 3 inch in US currency?) thick and the holdfasts are 18mm with my calipers. I went with a 19mm hole and seemed to have held my log nice and tight (just the one). Knocked...

I had forgotten just how good this workholding masterclass is.

Got my holdfasts today. What a revelation in holding my chunk of lumber to mill it down. Me being the human milling machine armed with a massive Disston ripsaw. Thanks for the reminder (about workholding...).

Thanks for this btw Andy. Helps alot.

Holdfast holes - is there really much science behind palcement?

Before I start drilling into my joist/bench. Just to confirm that my holdfasts are 18mm Richard Tomes (or whatever the UKW guy was who made them back then). I'm assuming then that a 19mm hole would be quite appropriate and I'll do a test run/fit shortly. Have made a 'squaring up' jig but won't...
