• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Holdfast holes - is there really much science behind palcement?

Anyway, holdfasts are here. 19mm thick auger bought from Wickes. Will double check thickness, make a squaring jig and get em made.

Steve. I think you misunderstood. 19mm hole in a joist type top. Its about 70mm thick so that hows far I will drill down Steve.

Holdfast holes - is there really much science behind palcement?

I usually measure thrice, cut twice. This time I plan yo make a jig to go with the roofers square and other square. I'm gonna get it straight, first time 😆

After making this (wooden piece, with glue I should have scrubbed off properly as its not taken the coat of Sandolin too well) I never thought much of it. But after manually closing the latch for at least 2 years, it feels good. Saves at least 2.5 seconds for more woodworking time.

Holdfast holes - is there really much science behind palcement?

Thanks Accipiter. Yes, I guess a 19mm drill bit is a good shout. Going to buy now.

Holdfast holes - is there really much science behind palcement?

Hmmm. That answers it nicely thanks Accipter sir. I need to get this log processed (with the human milling machine - me... I feel rather poorly after getting about 4 boards out of it and a Disston saw already) as its getting in the way of my bike riding. Can't handle it sat outdoors for another...

Holdfast holes - is there really much science behind palcement?

That's my outdoorsy bench (now slightly warped from a winter of outdoors) and these are the holdfasts. I'm going to get a 19mm bit now unless someone stops me. I was thinking about 3 holes for now and there's 2 holdfasts being delivered this afternoon...

Holdfast holes - is there really much science behind palcement?

Hi all. After many many moons just getting away with workholding using Irwin clamps, my Zeiss, Sheffield Tool Co, Axminster QR and sometimes my Stabila 1m level... or whatever else comes to hand. I've finally got a couple of nice Holdfasts from the UKW forum. Apparently made by an ex forum...

    What I have fixed today

The 'light problem' is a bloomin strange one. Why do people put such good bulbs in then add a massive lamp shade all around!! In my kitchen I upgraded the tubelight to an ultra low energy saving affair. Still, when I turn on the light, it goes straight off (by, as they say, 'my better half')...

    What I have fixed today

Well, that didn't go quite as I'd expected. Had to end up sacrificing about 8 or 12 Spax screws to hold the sycamore in place (as a brace). The latch/iron needed restraightening, then reversing the 'too straight now'. An extra screw in the top and hopefully all feeling solid now. Just left the...

    What I have fixed today

The scary home office lady was out. So a quick bit more getting done to the neighbours gate... Pressure treated timber recovered from my bin. Shaped up and polyerthahnae glue ready. Just needs a bit of water then figure out how to get some Jenolyte on the metal fixings withing getting all...

Another job done with a perfect excuse of 'I'm working on the bathroom, love' (I needed to hold/clamp the window board that has already taken some finish/varnish both sides, before taking some extra shavings to finish the sizing) whilst I get myself yet another essential woodworking job out the...

When people get the wrong idea.

Some people are just, well, stupid!

When people get the wrong idea.

My mate is like that. Really good at what he does but the amount of corners cut (in regards to health and safety... no mask when working with dust!!) just to 'get on with the job. Good you made yourself scarce with the lampost idea Lons and sorry to hear about the young lady. Well done getting...

    What I have fixed today

Not quite got a picture of it. But, work in progress of my 70ish year old neighbours gate. She had a stroke about 4 years ago and slowly been recovering. Gate is knackered and for some reason council haven't ever been out to repair it. Anyway, the socket that holds the top hinge is/was out of...

I had forgotten just how good this workholding masterclass is.

Thanks for this @Cabinetman and I shall give it a watch later. I'm still working on my 3rd (proper) bench though my current 2 are doing me ok.

I will pop a moisture meter on the 'to buy' list. If it doesn't survive on the window ledge, doesn't matter as to me its modern art. It'll be getting filled in due course if need be, but for now the epoxy appears to have done ok.

When you say 'standing' Mike. Do you mean about the tree having been dead a while (there appears to be insect holes in it, but I sprayed some wood rot treatment) or the fact that I may have stored it without sitting it horizontally. The wood store is horizontal wood with decent air gaps in...

Pictures of it and its family over the couree of the year. First pic of it in the yard where I met the lumberjack is from April 2025 and it felt (IMO) dry then. The 'smack it against itself' test yielded 'no boggyness) but I'm not expert. Just a learning curve.
